we had a stray cat come to our house, she is tame and very friendly, so we took her in as our own. She is healthy, just old. this morning when I went to feed her (she stays outside) her face was really swollen under her chin and around her mouth and up towards her eyes. She loves to chase bugs and eat them, could this be from a wasp sting? or perhaps a snake bite?
we do live out in the country, and I could not find any entrace wounds. I gave her some benadryl in her water.
Any idea what it could be???

My guess would be an insect sting of some sort or maybe a puncture from another animals teeth or claws. There is also the possibility that it is a tooth or gum abscess. Check inside the mouth.

Cats often get into fights and cat bites can be quite bad.
Cats have a poison behind their canine teeth, so if ever you have been bitten by a cat you would need to go to the hospital for a tetanus or anti biotic or both!
So if the cat has been bitten by another cat, it could turn septic. it is always difficult to know what to do with a stray as you don't want to incur costs, but if it persists and the cat looks worse the animal charities would help.
Of course yes it could be a wasp sting or an allergy - only time will tell, just keep a close eye on her.

Call the vet and ask what their recommendation is...
If you decide to keep the cat, you will probably have to bring it in and pay for its vet bill.
If you decide not to pay for the vet bill, you can probably surrender the cat to the vet clinic, and they will bring it to the shelter after treatment.
You can also call your local animal control or animal rescue group, who will take the cat and treat it if you can't afford to keep it.
You definitely need to call some professional, either the vet or animal control. It could be something minor like a sting, or something major like an abscess. The cat definitely needs treatment.
By the way, cats do NOT have poison behind their teeth, the reason that their bites can get infected is that their mouths have bacteria in them--human bites can get equally infected (if one child bites another). So the tetanus, etc. is not because of any poison, only to head off bacteria problems.

The cat could have a tooth abscess. This would cause swelling all over the face, especially around the mouth and under the eyes(if the abscess is in a upper tooth.
It couls also be the she had a fight with another cat, and has an abscess from the fight. Unfortunately, with abscesses from fights, the wound heals before the abscess forms.
Either way, it is probably worth you taking her to a vet, if you are truly very concerned with it.

If the swelling doesn't go down in the next day or two, you might want to take her to a vet or get a antibiotic for her. The inflamation could be due to a number of things. Most likely if she is outside, it is from infection. (such as getting bit by a snake or possible a wasp) The vet can also give her a rabies shot incase that is causing the inflamation.

You shouldnt give her benadryl thats for sure some antihistamines are deadly to cats......Probably a bug or snake bite as you say but you should consult a vet and dont try medicating her yourself...many human medicines can kill cats!!!

Yeah, it could be a sting. I had that happen to one of my cats and it reallly scared me. Vet gave her something to shrink the swelling but cat seemed to be fine. She did stop chasing bees though.

I'd call a vet, sounds like your assumptions of stings sound right.
