In the beginning of Christianity, there were no denominations. But as the gospel spread to various countries, people responded slightly differently (see gnostics). The Catholic church sprung up as the dominant religion. However, many Christians felt that the church was not following God's teachings so they protested and left the church. Some of the particular doctrines they protested over are enumerated in Martin Luthers 99 thesis. (google it). Protestants, most notably, don't view the Pope as God on earth (vicarius fili dei), not believe in confession, purgatory, and other Catholic beliefs not found in the Bible. Examples of such are being able to earn heaven through works, or paying for it, praying to Saints, and chanting things like Hail Mary... However, overtime, some Catholic beliefs have crept into Protestant churches. And many Protestants dropped some beliefs but kept others such as Sunday being the Sabbath is purely Catholic and not substantiated in the Bible. Another is that the dead are in heaving looking down on us.

The Roman Catholic Church was amongst the first churches to be founded/ built and the were some people in the church who later on did not agree with some of the Catholic laws i.e. Priests not being allowed to marry. Then this group of people decided to go their different ways and started their own churches. They protested against the church, which is why they were then called Protestant.

There are 3 major branches of Christianity, Catholic (with its head being the Pope in Rome, said to be founded by St. Peter), Orthodox (another ancient form, highly decorative, practised in the 'Eastern countries e.g. Russia, Greece, Coptic Arabs, etc. , which has many 'Popes") and then there are the Protestants.
Protestants started in North Europe when the local kings 'protested' against the greater power and control of the Roman Popes over their kingdoms. King Henry VIII 'protested' against Rome and famously attempted to purge England of Roman Catholics.

Catholicism was the predominant religion in Europe until two people came along: Henry the Eighth, who began the Anglican Church, and Martin Luther, who began the Lutheran church.
Henry, who was king of England, needed to have control of the church in order to nullify one of his marriages. Luther was a religious man, who saw that there was corruption in the church and wanted reform; instead, a new sect of Christianity sprung up.
Protestant religions (named after the protests to the corruption of the Catholic church) are an offshoot of Anglicanism (the Anglican church was Henry's new church) or of Lutheranism, though that doesn't mean that they all have the same beliefs. One major difference is that there is less attention paid to Mary, Jesus's mother, in Protestant sects. I have heard that some Lutherans see the Pope as the anti-Christ, but I'm not sure how accurate that assertion is.
All Christian sects believe in Jesus Christ as the savior, however.
Without knowing which sect of Christianity you belong to, it is difficult to say what the difference is between your sect and Catholicism.
