Some people with disrupted sleep schedules or circadian rhythm disturbances experience sleep paralysis or
wake panic attacks.

To avoid it:

get enough sleep
reduce stress
exercise regularly (but not too close to bedtime)
keep a regular sleep schedule

I have had them and after having so many I learned to just relax and go back to sleep. They use to be very scary for me so i feel your pain.

OMG, I was just ready to get off YA and go to sleep when I saw your question! This frightening experience happened to me several years ago and to this day I can still remember it! I was sleeping and I became "conscious"but, I opened my eyes, looked down at my body but was unable to move! I tried for several minutes and was terrified because I couldn't move despite trying! I finally drifted back to sleep. it never happened again but I always wondered, what the heck was that!!!I think if it ever happened again, the right thing to do would be to let it pass.

I have actually heard alot of people speak of this where it feels like someone is holding you down and you can not speak or move. Some people have said that they've tried to scream for help but they couldn't. It seems really scary & I hope it never happens to me. Everyone I ever heard said they've experienced it said that is such a scary feeling. I wonder what it is though.

yes this happens to me every month or so. I don't know what causes it. I try the rocking back and forth thing, which sometimes works. Sometimes I just dream I woke up and then I get pissed when I realize I'm still dreaming.

I suppose it was scary when I was little, but now when it happens I just get annoyed.

This used to happen to me all the time and it was horrifying...After doing alot of research on sleep paralysis and now know that it is normal and I am not going to die, I have it much less often and if I do, I just relax, close my eyes and go with the flow, and I fall asleep.

I went through something like that years ago the only thing I though to do was pray and I did and what ever was going on released me and I continued to pray and went back to sleep and the next morning I was fine.

I hate it when that happens!!! It has only happened to me twice or three times in my life. It's a scary feeling. It happened to me when I didn't get enough sleep. Do you get at least 8 hours of sleep per day or are you stressed out? Maybe it's bad fung shui too. My roommate said it only happened to him at lot at this one place he lived.

I have had lots of those cases. You can wait it out, but most folks panic, you can start by rocking yourself, just rock hard and you will come out of that trance. I have not researched the issue out til this day, but I am just sharing my experience.
