It gathers many patches into one executable and also adds a basic firewall. It basically fixes Windows and updates it so you are less vulnerable to being hacked. You do need it to be able to patch Windows from now on.

The only reason I have service pack 2 is because it was pre-installed on my new computer. I wouldn't bother getting it if it wasn't already on my pc.
As far as I'm concerned service pack 2 is just a glorified pop up blocker which takes up too much hard disk space. It also takes about 2 hours to download.
Instead of getting service pack 2 just use a different browser instead of internet explorer (maybe netscape or firefox) and download a free anti virus and anti spyware off the net (maybe spybot search and destroy and avast), also download a free firewall such as kerio, service pack 2 has a built in firewall but it's useless.

Service Pack 2 (SP2) fixes a lot of bugs that came with WinXP (no surprise) and makes it a lot more stable and less vulnerable to hacking etc. It's available from Microsoft on CD if you order it from their website.

if it is an "on line" computer then yes , service pack 2 is necessary , however , if it is a computer you don't intend on connecting to the inter-net , you don't need it.
