best way for someone to realize something is to tell them straight out what's on your mind don't sugar coat it. usually you don't have to be mean to get your point across but you can't
beat around the bush either. be honest, be upfront. if that doesn't work don't call don't accept calls.

just tell him that you like him as a friend, but nothing more, and
possible he may going through that hurting pase since his
girfriend broke up with him. so just give him time, thing will
work it self out.

when you lead someone on, it's tough to undo what you have done. as long as he had a g/f . you never had to worry about him coming after you so you baited him, now he is free, time to put up when you wouldn't shut up.
