I'm sure that all of us like a nice red juicy apple. In fact, it probably makes us drool to think of one. In the same way, NY is probably the most attractive city for people who want or need to relocate. Given an option, 95% of people around the world would opt for NY. New York is called the 'Big Apple' for that reason plus the infinite number of opportunities for growth, career advancement and lifestyle improvement that the city offers.

club, and a popular 1930s dance known as the “Big Apple.”

Not sure... I would hazard a guess that apple represents the core, the center, so the Big Apple would stand for that. NYC has for a very long time been the largest, most diverse city in the country.
But good question. Can't say for certain. :)

Supposedly the city of New York adopted this theory that stable hands in Louisiana planned a trip to a New York racecourse and referred to it as the big apple (like the reward of a big apple given to a Thoroughbred horse after a race).

when new york city first started, it actually was a great big apple. then later when it turned into a city, people kept calling it the big apple, because they remembered the time when it was a really big apple.
