Its complicated. He told me he loved me and asked me to marry him. Showed me he really cared about me, 2wks ago he called it off on account of a death in the family, then came back friday, hasn't called since. Told me he really did care about me, but didn't want me to see him like that.

i think your man is hurting and some people's response to hurt is to push people away, even the people who they care about and love. With people like these, it is not that they are rejecting their loved ones, it is to them the best way to deal with what they are going through and they think that with the way they are, they do not have anything to offer but deep inside they long for someone to come through and be there for them and tell them that it is okey to hurt and that the loved one is there for them.
Sometimes, it will seem as if they are impenetrable and it can be frustrating but keep on making them feel that you truly care and that you are right there and that you understand. So go ahead, be there for him, give him a quite hug or touch his hand, you don't have to say a word. If you can't be there with him in person, send him a card or flowers, or call him and just say something like " i am thinking of you right now and just want you to know that".
It may also be true that he wants to end the relationship but you won't lose anything by doing the above things, you might have lost a potential lover but you would have retained his respect and admiration.

you just need to hunt him down and confront him face to face and ask him if he really loves you.Tell him to be honest and just tell you point blank what is on his mind.That way if it is over then you know the reason or how he feels.Tell him that you can handle any answer but he needs to tell you if he has found someone else or whatever it is.then you will know if you did or didn't do something or if you should just forget him and move on or if it is something that yall both just need to talk over.you could call him and say this but it is always better face to face because you can actually see alot of what they are thinking.If it is caused from the death in the family then he may just be stressed,if this is the case then you need to be there and let him know that you are there for him no matter what.

He might not want to see you because he is going throught post traumatic stress syndrome. He probably loved this person very much and is very depressed. You will know if he is over you if you find out that he is seeing other women. Hope this helps and good luck.
