First of all, I believe you should not refer to it as the "Muslim world", this would be like calling America the "Christian world" when not everyone in America is Christian or has the same beliefes and values. Just as Christianity has different sects (ie-Catholic, Protestant, Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist, etc.) Islam also has different sects (Sunni, Shi'ite, Sufism, and the long seperated Baha'i and Ahmadis).

Now, to answer your question...life is valued, otherwise what would be the point in taking it? There are two terms which refer to Islamic martyrdom; tattarrus and shaheed. The principle of tattarrys when translated means "dressing up" and refers to the principle of non-combatative Muslims to get involved in a war against the enemy (infidels) by standing with the soilders and more than likely getting killed. This practice is very controversial amongst the followers of Islam. Some people believe that those who do this are sinners who may either be sent to Heaven or Hell, but by sacrificing their life to Islam are going to be forgiven and go to Paradise. Others believe that it is wrong for a Muslim to spill the blood of another Muslim, even if it is their own blood. Shaheed which can be translated as "witness" refers to a person who takes their own life for a cause, since the Qur'an (Islamic holy book) states that it is wrong for a person to take their own life, Muslims may not always be the bombers. These people are taking their life for a cause, to make a statement, or to protect their land, culture, and beliefs. Sadly the only ones we ever see in the news are the extremists who bomb with the intent to hurt others.

The Muslim religion is one of peace and understanding, the term Islam comes from the word "salam" meaning "peace" and "one who has given themselves to God". The belief system is actually not too far off from Christianity. Yet, as in every religion there will be those who believe in good, peaceful lives, and there will be extremists and terrorists. Its the latter group that gives the whole group a bad reputation.

People who kill themselves to act as martyrs do not do it because they do not value their lives, they do it because they know it is the best way to get peoples attention so that the whole world is listening. And it does not always have to be about religion, Buddist monks used to burn themselves alive to protest the war, an American woman even once killed herself to help give American women the power to vote. Its all about what you believe in and what you are willing to do to make that cause known.

You're just asking for a whole range of way out answers from people who have probably never even spoken a Muslim.
Yes they value life, but they also have a strong sense of community and see their cause as desperate enough to sacrifice their own lives for the betterment on others. They also believe that if they die in 'battle', helping to save other muslims, this is one way to reach nirvana. The ultimate sacrifice.

You should note that most Muslims are really quite peaceful and it's only a small number of fanatics (just as there are christian fanatics too) that live their lives quite similarly to you and I.

Life is highly valued by any religion. The problem with these suicide bomers in Iraq and Afghanistan is they've been brainwashed by people who misinterpreted the Kuran (is it with a C? sorry if I've offended anyone). Muslim is actually a very peaceful religion, a close second to Buddhism. I hope this helps you understand the subject better.

I would say that they have a confused teaching. They believe that if they are martyred in the name of Allah (by the way, not the God of Israel or Christian God), they will be rewarded by him in Paradise/Heaven. They really think they are doing the correct thing, this is what they have been taught. I'm not sure if that applies to all Muslims, I do know that it applies to the extremists Islam followers.

heh, thats funny. Life isn't valued by many religion.

Think of all the crusades that christians have gone on. Three crusades all ended up in massacred, that killed more people (those people who went on crusade died nearly to last man) then those Muslim bombers ever could.

Why do people continue to generalize about hundreds of millions of people? Why do people feel it is o.k. to put down an entire religion and its followers, based on isolated events?

Imagine if a Muslim, having read today's paper, asked, "Why do Christians feel it is o.k. to rape a girl, murder her, then murder her family?" (some American soldiers did this in Iraq)

Surely most of us would yell back, "Not all Christians do this! And those who do aren't Christians!"

Well, the majority of Muslims believe those who fly planes into buildings aren't real Muslims.

Please learn about the religion of Islam, and get to know some Muslim Americans, before you make sweeping, negative generalizations about Muslims throughout the world.

Not really. what I always find interesting though, is arabs running around in joy when one of them straps a bomb on and kills 20 jews. How is it they are not joyous when israel launches a counter attack?
Aren't those killed still considered Holy Fighters?
Seems like any death of a Muslim in the conditions of 'Holy War', would be a cause to celebrate.
If Israel would bomb indiscriminately like the palestinians do, maybe the palestinians would get sick and tired of the carnage that Israel really has the ability to unleash on them.
I guess it is lucky for them(palestinians)that the Israelites show so much restraint.
