Body Painting is just what it sounds - any time the body is painted with something.
It can be done for erotic reasons or artistic reasons, or purely recreational reasons.
Most kinds on non-toxic paints can be used on the body, though acrylics crack if you're going to be moving a lot, and it will stick to body hair, and some kinds of paint don't dry very quickly. The key is to never put paint near the eyes or mouth (espescially red! the most commonly toxic color) that isn't specially designed for those areas, as they are very sensitive.
Face paint or stage makeups work very well. Ben Nye, Kryolan and Mehron all make paints/makeups specially formulated for body use. Other things often used include colored latex (which also sticks to hair) and specialized food products (chocolate body paints or flavored paints), though those tend to be used for the more erotic realms. .
