First of all, let me say that I used to have social anxiety and I think you are pretty cool to be looking for ideas to overcome it. Here are a few things that helped me.
1. The first thing is don't avoid people. You have to face your fear. Everytime you face your fear you lessen the power it has over you. By avoiding people you acknowledge to yourself that you have a reason to be afraid of people.
2. Understand that many people feel the same as you do. They just don't show it. We all have insecurities about ourselves.
3. When you do something stupid in front of someone ( I used to stutter or forget a word when I was nervous) just laugh at yourself or just keep going with the conversation. It's ok to mess up, really. Give yourself a break. So what you're not perfect. None of us are. Just blow it off.
4. Most of all, when I recognized how much God loves me, then it didn't matter so much what others thought of me.
5. Focus more on others and how to make them comfortable and feel important and you'll forget about yourself.
I'm proud of you that you want to get over this. YOU CAN! It will take some time so be patient with yourself. But it WILL happen and you will look back to now and realize how far you've come. Go for it!

I know how that feels. Maybe the core reason is because you feel you won't be able to comfortably express yourself at what you are best doing. Sometimes people have these great talents, but don't get to express them well around certain crowds, so they get uncomfortable and just totally enclose themselves into their own circle.
Find some people who you think can help you feel comfortable (non-judgmental types) or those who are less secure than you, so that you have the chance to open up and then help them open up, too. :) And get a couple of good friends who don't judge you at all - that is a key. You need people around you who really care about you for who YOU are no matter HOW you are, and you should do the same for them, too! :)

There are some medications you can take to reduce your stress, but I for one don't like meds unless I have to. Whenever I begin to freak out in public, I smile, and politely excuse myself, then go outside or to a less crowded area. I always make sure I am close to an exit, so I won't disturb many people. I take deep breaths, and reassure myself that everything is okay.

Do you want to be around crowds. Do you think you're missing something? I would make sure to start with people you know. Invite some people over to your place and play cards or someting. Keep it a quiet setting. Where the energy level is low.

well there are medications for that, like paxil. but maybe you need to desensitize your self to those types of situations. start with small groups of people and force yourself to interact (you don't have to be the life of the party but listen and talk to those that are interesting to you) and then slowly increase the number of people you are around. you just need to make the mental switch and it also requires you to shrink your personal space bubble for a time. but maybe you don't like crowds because it is a very large group of annoying people, in that case i totally understand and would just go home and not waste my time.
