why do people look at people with ADHD as if their retarded?

the reason i ask this question is because you may not know that person has ADHD if that person dont tell you. ADHD affects every one and you have to be more open minded about it
so if you have nothing nice to write dont write nothing at all

i dont get it either.... i hate it people think that ADD and ADHD are serious disorders so the people with it cant to anything right my brother has ADD and my dad has ADHD and they are fine.... my brother is gonna graduate next year and hes in all honors classes and my dads some computer guy so hes not retarted i hate it how people think that

my guidance counselor had ADHD, and yes, he is hyper and he can't sit still, but he is the coolest guy. There are some kids that live down the street from me that have ADHD also, and they are absolutely wild, but I have never thought of them as retarded. I don't think that anyone with ADHD is retarded they are simple hyper and can not focus...that's not retarded in any way.

Retarded is simply the mind working at a slower pace than the average human. To retard means to slow down, retarded is just to be slow, and I don't think people with ADHD are retarded in anyway shape or form according to those definitions.

Just because people are different, doesn't mean they are retarded, there is nothing wrong with someone who is a little different.

Hi Erik - some people are just ignorant, and unfortunately seem to be happy staying that way. Actually most people with ADHD and ADD are much brighter than average because they are forced to cope with much more than the rest of us. There needs to be more information about it given to the public to educate us all, and help us sympathize, not criticize. Some famous people who are said to have had either ADD or ADHD are Jim Carrey, Prince Charles, Stevie Wonder, Socrates, "Magic" Johnson, Marilu Henner, Albert Einstein, Terry Bradshaw, Ernest Hemingway, John F. Kennedy, Michael Jordan, John Lennon, Sir Winston Churchill, Cher, Harry Belafonte, Tom Cruise, Leonardo da Vinci and Walt Disney.

I don't think they do. That's one thing I've never felt others thought about me. I've got a master's degree and can't find part-time work to supplement my disability income because I'm overeducated.

Some think I'm lazy because I don't work, some think I'm crazy because I've also got a diagnosis of bipolar- but it's my sleep problems and symptoms of my ADHD that are really disabling, not my mood. If I could organize, and wasn't so distractible, I'd still be working. But no one ever has called me retarded!

It's just plain laziness, I think. People tend to categorize others based upon first impressions. If someone with ADHD acts in ways that are inconvenient, then they're "retarded," either literally or metaphorically.

I have friends with ADHD, and I admire their flexibility in thinking. I tend to get stuck on one thing too long, and they can switch tasks and ideas quickly.

I've seen a few extreem cases like my brother whom I will tell no tales, I will say though that I believe it is a lack of patience. The people that are looking at it that way don't want to take the time to understand the "hyper-distracted".
