If in doubt check the oven and open it to feel if it's hot (without getting burned) The indicator light is on because the oven is on. I don't think it will turn off after preheating. Then you will bake or roast whatever for the time needed. Of coarse you will set a timer. I still keep watch on it regardless just out of habit.

Most ovens have a way to let you know when the oven reaches the right temp. However, if you have an older oven, you might want to invest in an oven thermometer. About 6 dollars at the local Wal-mart or K-mart. As a chef, I would never leave it up to chance when it comes to oven temps.

Most electric oven have a red light that comes on when the oven reaches the set temp. Newer ones will tell you how long till its ready by a window on the temp. setting area. Read the ovens instruction manual if you have one . Hope this helps you .

I cook and bake all the time. I usually never wait more that 5 minutes and sometimes not at all. I've never had any problems.

It should be almost instant however you can wait ten minutes after turning it on, (just to be sure) before placing your food in it.
