Do it safely and slowly. The best way to lose weight is by making healthy lifestyle changes - increasing your physical activity, and decreasing the amount of unhealthy foods in your diet. To increase the chances of you sticking to your healthier choices, introduce them gradually. For example, start by committing to walking at least 15 minutes a day. A week later add a new change to your routine, like increasing fruits and veggies in your diet, and decreasing fried foods. A week later, add another small change...etc. A good place to start is with your family doctor, he or she can help guide your weight loss plan.
If you don't want to attract extra attention, you can try working out in the privacy of your home, or perhaps around your neighborhood. Also, if you are eating with your friends and they happen to notice that you've chosen a healthier meal than you usually would perhaps, just play it down by saying something like 'I just wanted to try something different'. Good luck to you!

Honey if you need to lose 85 pounds they are going to notice that you are losing weight. Drink LOTS of water and watch your calorie intake. Try to walk or exercise 3-4 times a week for about 30 minutes.

As far as your friends not knowing, that already shows a potential problem. If you are at all self conscious about losing the weight, then it reflects a lack of mental toughness that will probably undermine any effort to lose the weight in the first place. One of the first steps toward lifestyle change is the humility to admit to yourself and everyone else that you need a lifestyle change. If you are worried about your friends, then how much more self conscious are you going to be when you feel like strangers are looking at you if you join a gym, etc. etc. etc.

It is good to feel that kind of self consciousness. It is part of the motivation that should drive you to stay committed. Also, it is part of the reward, if you make a major lifestyle change and come through and succeed.

You need to bear down with your mind now, upon any shame that you may feel about your weight or weight loss, so that it won't creep up on you later and inhibit your commitment.

As far as weight loss itself, get in on some weight training. Serious weight training, particularly squatting and full body movements like deadlifts, push presses, cleans, etc. etc. etc. are the absolute best way to lose weight.

This may also help with the insecurity. Because you can buy a cheap barbell set for your own home and do a lot with that without anybody being around. I will warn you though, there is more unused exercise equipment sitting around in American homes then you can imagine.

The truth is, getting into a gym, letting your friends know, getting yourself out in the public eye with your commitment is actually an advantage, because you can exercise on your own and easily quit without anybody knowing one way or the other, but if you join a gym and go a couple of times and your friends see you are trying to lose weight, and then you give up, you will look like an idiot. Its good to put yourself in a position where you feel more embarassed about not staying committed than you feel exhausted or impatient about keeping at it.

I am sure somebody out there is going to tell you not to squat or deadlift, or this that or the other, but if it hurts to squat, its because you are weak and inflexible.

I lifted weights for years when I was younger, and now haven't done so in about five years, but I never gain weight no matter how much I eat, because I retain so much muscle mass, even in my thinner, weaker state that I burn more calories at rest than the average person probably burns when exercising.

Adding muscle mass, just to give you a convenient analogy, is like putting a larger engine in a car.

If you have just a little muscle mass, then you function like a 4 cylinder engine and you can exercise as hard as you want, kind of like reving the engine in your car real hard, and you still can't burn off as much gas as an 8 cylinder engine that is barely above idle.

You need to become a fuel burning machine. The only thing that burns biological fuel is muscle. Cardio workouts, aerobic exercise, all of this kind of thing burns energy, that is calories, but only weightlifting really begins to build the muscle that makes it easy to burn calories and stay lean.

Make yourself sweat under a barbell and I promise you that you will lose weight and gain confidence.

I am a motivational speaker and personal trainer in the San Fransisco area, by the way and I have dealt with many people in exactly your situation.

Don't worry about that because there was a perfect choice. To buy for yourself one of machines of perfect choice programme. Carry it into your room and trying to exercise. You will do this without attracting too much attention from your friends because there will be nobody know that. Have a success !

Others can give good advice about how to lose weight (I have the opposite problem...need to gain weight), but I would question what kinds of friends you have if you feel the need to conceal your weight-loss from them.

If they're not the types of people to be supportive, then maybe you might want to consider surrounding yourself with different people.

Then again, disregard that if you have other reasons for not wanting them to know. But, again, as others said, they *are* going to notice such a large amount.

I don't quite follow your question. Who cares about the attention your friends get or don't get from you wanting to be healthy and lose weight? You need to redirect your focus on getting healthy and taking care of you. If you friends freak, they weren't friends to begin with.

eat lots of fruits and veggies, drink lots of water, sit-ups/leg-lifts, and walking. getting your metabolism up will help you burn calories even when your not doing anything. and by the way, who cares if your friends notice... do it for yourself, to heck with everyone else !!
