Dogs should be on puppy food until they are about one year old. About two weeks before you are ready to switch to adult food, start mixing the adult and puppy together, gradually decreasing the puppy and increasing the adult. Doing that for roughly two weeks will be a much easier transition for the dog's stomach than switching straight over.

Most vets will tell you to continue feeding them puppy food until at least 12 months of age and for some dogs even two years depending on their rate of development.... Some puppies, {especially larger breeds} can be prone to a condition in which their muscles and internal body systems grow faster than their skeletal structure can handle.... This can happen as early as 5 months of age and in cases like this a vet may suggest transferring them to adult food {and/or specially formulated breed specific puppy food} sooner rather than later as part of a program to help control and stabilize the excessive growth.. Consult you veterinarian before switching to adult foods. See what he/she recommends based on your dog's individual rate of development......... Oh, by the way when you finally do switch your pup to adult food you may want to do so gradually over the course of a couple of weeks... Begin by adding a small amount of the new food into the mix with the current food. Increase the amount of new food and decrease the amount of current food every two-three days until your pup is eating only the new food. .Also using a higher quality food "One with no artifical ingredients, fillers or by-products is suggested, but not manditory.. Many dogs are raised on the otherwise Lower quaility foods and do just fine". By gradually changing the food and/or using higher quaily foods you lessen the chances of stomach/bowel upset and/or your pup rejecting the food.... However, Stomach/bowel upset and/or rejection of food may still occur.... So do not get to concerned (it does take time to adjust) unless the symptoms of rejection and/or Stomach/Bowel upset presist for more than a week and/or become severe ......... Hope that I don't sound to long winded and that my advice helps........ Good Luck

When they turn 1 or so. Then you feed them food that is not puppy food or dog food for dogs that are seniors (5 years and older).

first of all i hope you are feeding him puppy food that is specially formulated for large breeds-if not his bones could grow too fast & as a result may become weak-aside from that i would probably stop feeding him puppy food at about 6 months

It depends on what breed of dog you have. Some are considered adults at one year old, some not until two. You should give them puppy food until they have reached maturity and stopped growing.

Usually when the puppy stops growing, at about a year and a half. Their bodies are developed and they no longer need the same nutrition and dog chow is better then. I changed my dog over then and he is healthy as a horse...or a healthy dog:)

I bred airdale terriers and I told my people who bought them from me to change puppy food to a adult food, is this, almost two years, you slowly mix adult food into the puppy food and at two years they will be eating adult food.
