China is a great country to visit. I have had the opportunity twice to go over there (four months in Tianjin teaching English, and a month in Beijing at a university there taking classes, plus two years in Taiwan). It has become a second home for me.
The people are great, and are really friendly. There are many intresting sites to see, many doing with some part of China's 5000 year history. The food is cheap, abundent and tastes great (make sure you dont miss out on the street vendors!)
Sure there are downsides to China, but anywhere in the world there are downsides. If you get a chance to go over there, take it!
I personaly can't wait until I have another chance to go over there, and I plan on living there for an extended period of time (maybe five years or more) after I graduate.

China should be on your top priority list if you are thinking of travelling. Once you see China, you will never be the same person. It will change the way you see others. I live in California, I saw an ad in the paper about China tour the company name is China Focus (check their website). I chose a 13 day tour starting from Beijing ending in Shanghai and visited 10 other cities by car and by train. The hotels we were assigned to are not 5star but they are clean, the food is great and we ate 3 times a day and everything cost onlyover a thousand US dollars including the airfare from SF to Beijing and back all the hotel accomodation, bus, trains, food, tour guides. The only thing you have to pay for is your own shopping.

Going to China is like being reborn. It's so full of life!

I've been to Beijing and Shanghai and would love to do a longer trip throughout the country. The sights are so regal and vibrant. The food is amazing and flavorful. (I never had any digestive problems which is something to praise a country for.) The people are very energetic and passionate. There's so much dynamic energy as they move into the future.

I was in Beijing last fall and they are doing a lot of restoration for the 2008 Olympics. I'd wait till that date approaches so that you don't miss some of the historic sights which are being restored.

You need to expect the unexpected in China. Revel in it! Enjoy!

If that's not your cup of tea, try something tamer or more predictable, yet charming, like Singapore.

I am in China now. I work here. What do I think of China? I do believe China is progressing in a very rapid phase. If there's any time to get into this country, it is now before it realizes that it should close its doors to foreigners already. :)

Love it. Don't miss it. I've been in JiLin City, JiLin Province in northeast China for over a year. Wouldn't trade this experience for anything. Beautiful country, wonderful people. You can learn Chinese while getting paid $500/mo. (like $,5000/mo. stateside in spending power) to teach English. Send me your questions; I'll do my best to answer them.
