Your dogs should be on a heartworm preventitive. Either a pill or a chewable...once a month deal. They used to have a shot that lasted 6 months, but they have discontinued making it. As far as hooks, whips, rounds, etc....if you use Heartguard Plus, that prevents some of them. Usually if your dog has some type of worms, they will have abnormal bowel movements...in which case you should bring a fecal sample to your vet...and they can look at it under a microscope and find out what they have. If they have tapeworms, you would see them on the dogs/cats rear ends. Check with your vet if this is the case...they may not require a fecal sample brought in...but it helps because then they can tell you if they are getting them from fleas or from rodents...it's 2 different eggs. As for cats....same thing except the heartworm...may be different in your area though. Where I am we don't recommend heartworm prevention for them because heartworm in a cat has never been diagnosed in a cat in our area.

There is no medication that I know of that will protect your pet from worms. Except for heart worms. The best thing to do is take a stool sample to your vet at least once a year. Then, if they have worms the Vet will give the medication to get rid of them. If no worms no problem. If you have a problem with fleas your pet probably does have tapeworms, that is where they generally come from, but it is best to check for all worms at the same time . Remember, (because some vets don't tell you) If your pet has worms and he gives you medication to get rid of them. They need to get the medication again in two weeks!

If you're talking about intestinal worms, then they should be dewormed when they are puppies and kittens. It's usually a one-time treatment. If you're talking about heartworms, then yes, dogs and cats should both be on monthly heartworm prevention year-round. And most heartworm preventions also help to prevent many intestinal worms too, so you're getting a double-whammy!

Yeah, animals can get worms from so many things, you can't just avoid them.
They're yearly pills or chewables. Sometimes shots.
I have 3 dogs (2 pugs, 1 poodle) and one cat.
The pugs have chewables, they think they're treats.
The poodle has a pill that we pop open and pour the powder into wet food.
The cat gets a shot.
