Actually it was not 'Agent Orange' that caused the problems. The danger came from the oil that was used to make the Agent Orange stick to the vegetation after spraying. As an economy move 'used' oil was bought for this purpose by Dow chemical. Some of this used oil came from electrical transformers - this oil was contaminated by a chemical known as 'PCB.' At the time the hazards of PCB was not known and in fact it was not until years after the Vietnam war ended that it was discovered that PCB is one of the most potent carcinogens known.

Trivia note: It was not just the military who used this stuff 'Agent Orange' was a common industrial/agricultural herbicide during the 1960s. As a result there were many cancer deaths of people who worked in the agricultural and forestry industries.

I have seen many pictures of deformed children in Vietnam after the War ended in 1975. I mean majorly deformed children.
Of Course, the United States and science may not have know at the time that Agent Orange was poison, but those in leadership and in Government and Industry did know that some substances can be very lethal. However, they did not insist on testing it before they dropped Agent Orange all over the countryside of Vietnam.
They dropping millions of gallons of Agent Orange on the people, our troops, the land and waterways in Vietnam. Vietnam remains a scar on the body politics of America, both democrats and republicans for this reason alone.
