Eve desired wisdom. Up to that time they were "blind" and "naked" and not "like god" since they had no knowledge. So they were basically common animals. So leave Adam out he was a useless lazy bugger and only did what his wife told him. Anyway someone mentioned "tree of life" but Eve & Adam were not aware of any such tree. The reader knows about this tree, but did they? I don't see the verse where the creator tells them about any tree of life. So, the tree of life is the christ indeed, but you have to [know] about it, which means your eyes have to be opened, and that's just what the serpent did/does (the serpent is the christ), hehe.

The meaning of partaking of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is a metaphor for Judgment. When we judge things we ascribe varying degrees of acceptability to what we are judging. Some we call good others we call evil, some better some worse. Before the fall everything was understood to have come directly from God. Having come from God it was understood to be all good. At some point we made a mistake and started to judge some of Gods gifts as better and some as worse. This is the meaning of the fall from grace, or from true understanding. We had attained the false knowledge of good and evil.
In truth everything God provides for us can be used to further our spiritual growth. Therefore it is all good. Often what is best for us is not what we ourselves would have chosen. So we call what we like good and what we think we don’t like bad or evil. If you look at this carefully you begin to see that it is like a formula. A formula that can be reversed. If by judging we removed ourselves from paradise if we stopped judging we should immediately recognize that we never really left. This is true because God created us perfect. God can’t make mistakes. We are not able to change the will of God so we must still be perfect just like we were created except in our own judgmental dreams.
This is what Jesus was trying to tell us when he ask us to love our neighbor. Notice that there is no except for in this directive. He obviously intended for us to love everyone without exception. If we operate by the currently accepted standards we love only those who we have judged worthy of our love. If you think about this carefully you realize that this is not love at all it is only judgment. The very same judgment or knowledge of good and evil that lost paradise for us. Jesus was trying to show us the way home but we missed the point of what he was trying to tell us. He fully intended for us to apply our love in a universal manner. He meant exactly what he said, don’t judge just love your neighbor without any exceptions.
If we can learn to do this we can return from our long painful dream of judgment to the place that God intended all along for us to be.

According to the bible myth, Adam & Eve were the equivalent to infants and had no concept of "right" or "wrong."
They weren't trying to fulfil a need, they were amusing themselves with no thought for the consequences. They could not have been aware of consequences due to their immaturity.

They ate (assimilated or consumed knowledge) from the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Satan).
That's why God said;
Gen 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
We all must eat (assimilate or consume knowledge) of the tree of life (Jesus Christ), to live for ever.
