I've seen 8 answers to this, some are dead wrong, while others are on the right track, but still not correct. "IPOD ADAPTER READY" does not mean you can buy and ipod and plug it right in. It means it has a port to plug an adapter into, that will accept your Ipod's input. There are different types of adapters. They all plug into the connector on the rear of the unit used to control other external items like CD changers or Sattelite tuners (which can be used in conjunction with most adapters). The simple cheap adapter is just an RCA level converter. You'd get a "y" adapter for your Ipod that does headphone jack to RCA, the plug the RCA end of it into the RCA end of the simple ipod adapter, then the other end into the stereo. You set the stereo to AUXILLIARY mode and control the tunes from your IPOD. The best adapter is a dedicated adapter like Pioneer's CD-IB100II http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/pg/product/details/0,,2076_310069685_307492523,00.html. Alpine has there version too. Not only do they charge the unit whiule being plugged in, they display song & folder info or your car's radio display and let you control the unit via your radio's controls. Way cooler.

it means the stereo can playback compressed audio files... as in MP3's.. these are the files that are stored on your ipod to listen to.

The stereo also has inputs for alternative audio players such as the ipod..

I would turn the ipod off and then back on. Then plug the ipod in with the car radio off. Then turn the radio on.
