You know, cutting a small hole in the side, pouring in vodka, then plugging it back up and letting it soak overnight. How much vodka is appropriate for a medium sized melon?

For a medium sized melon I'd use about 3/4 a bottle. Check out this website for more info....

I manage a farmer's market, so I've had a lots of time to experiment with boozy fruit. My advice with the vodka melon is to splurge on some nice vodka....the cheap stuff does overpower the watermelon flavor. Also, just before you serve it, put it in th freezer or in a ice chest for an hour or so to really cool it down. Another fruit that goes really well with vodka is pineapple! You can either attempt to bore a hole through the rind and pour in the vodka like watermelon or just cut it up and soak it in plastic bags make sure the plastic is heavy duty) and then serve with party picks. For and extra fun party mixer...don't cut the fruit....get a clean drill bit, drill individual holes in the top half of the fruit, insert straws and go for it! Another fun party fruit and vodka drink is the Jug of Love! Get an old pickle jar, a bunch of really ripe lemons, a couple o cups of sugar a bottle of Absolut Citron or other higher end lemon vodka and some party friends. Cut the lemons into thick slices and throw them in the jar, add a cup or two of sugar (depending on how sweet you like it) add the bottle of vodka and ice almost to the top. Seal the jar and cover the top with a towel just in case...this is when the party begins! Gather your friends and pass the jug around the circle each taking a turn shaking it vigorously. After it has made a circle or two it should be melted and mixed into a jar of lemony icy drunken goodness...hence the jug of love....on the next trip around the circle everyone give it a vigorous shake, opens and take a good long swig, seals her up and passes it along. Continue until everyone is completely satisfied or too buzzed to continue or has to make another batch, which ever comes first....its great for a group of any size, new friends or old...just avoid any open mouth sores...Enjoy!

Maybe 1/2 a 40oz. Put the holes in and let the liquid drain out first or else you can get those plastic syringes from the drug store and inject it for less mess. Good technique for makin vodka oranges too.

1 bottle (about 1.14 litres) for a large watermelon. I would use half a bottle or 3/4 for a medium melon.
