MATRIX! Seriously -- I'm a HUGE fan of the Matrix line of salon products. In fact, it is strictly forbidden to touch my shampoo in my house! :) My favorite is Matrix Curl Life .. and it smells yummy!

Because our hair is curly, it'll never really be 'soft'. If we leave it natural, we look like freaks. If we put product in it, you can tell, and you definetly can't run your fingers through it. I feel your pain. I use Paul Mitchell mousse. All you need is a little bit to run through your hair before you blow dry it (with a diffuser, of course). You can't run your fingers through it, but it will be softer than usual and it will move with you (as opposed to using hairspray).

I also found that it helped when I cut my hair from my waist up to my shoulders. I've had it that way ever since (about 6 years).

You may want to talk to a stylist and see if they have any ideas. Just specify that you don't want any kind of chemical treatment. You can try flat-ironing it, but it sounds like you want to keep it curly. If you try straightening it, use Matrix Sleek shampoo/conditioner, and then the black & gold conair flatiron. It says something like "Ceramic-somehting" on the front of it. It works wonders and is only $25 at Target.

Edited to add: You want to stay the heck away from drugstore shampoos and stuff. There is a lot of alcohol in the product, and the shampoos and conditioners leave junk in your hair. You're better off spending a little more for a much better product. Also, only wash your hair every other day, or every 3 days. Let the natural oils run through your hair to keep it healthy. Believe me .. even the celebrities with curly hair do it too.

Check out www.maxiusbeauty.com! The MAXIglide flat iron/straightener and the Maxius products Beyond Straight and The End are great. These items are pretty pricey, but well worth the money if you want great results and natural products. You can also purchase these on eBay (Brand New!) for a lot less than you pay from the company website.
