The USO was very helpful to me and my family when I was deployed in Iraq. Even if it is just a "cup of juice" like the other guy said, it is something. The USO has many facilities that give traveling soldiers and their families Internet access, good food, and place for the kids to play. Besides that it a place where someone thanks you for the job you are doing, which isn't as common as you might think. If you are thinking about joining, please do, it is a good organization that you will only make better by volunteering your services.

Sorry to be negative, I normally am not, but the USO never did anything for my in my 6 years with the Navy. They did give me a cup of fruit juice in O'Hare airport, forgot about that. Other than that though, I was always asked to donate money to them, however like most organizations I never saw them around. After 6 years and 2 times in the Persian Gulf, the Amvets, American leagion, and VFW did more for us.

I love the USO and thank you for wanting to volunteer!

5 or 6 years ago at the Seattle airport they had bunks set up to sleep at during your 10 hour army layover.

They also hand out Calling cards for free to soldiers over seas

I send them money every month.

I use to think that the USO was worthless because they never seemed to do anything. Then when I was deployed in Afghanistan I actually seen them in action and was impressed. If you want to do it go ahead, do what you think is right.
