Pain is our early warning system which gives us the opportunity to remove its cause before something really serious happens. For example, you feel deep discomfort/mild pain in the skin of your hand when you move it near a hot stove element. This gives you the opportunity to move it away before actually contacting the stove element and suffering a burn. As you hand gets nearer the element, it feels more uncomfortable.
Sometimes we are shielded from pain because there is too much of it. If you suffer an extreme break in a bone, the pain may suddenly become so severe that you will go into shock. Your mind numbs the nerve cells which are the pain signals in the affected area, the communication between your brain and the broken bone is shut off and the area feels numb. This explains how some athletes will make the big game-winning play even when their ankle is fractured, etc.

Pain is a defense mechanism. If we didnt feel pain, we would be much worse off.

its also a way of our body to remember not to do the things that will hurt itself, ie putting ur hand on a stove burner, our body feels the pain and we reflex, this prevents us from doing serious harm to ourselves, and also allows us to learn that the hot burner hurt so in the future we will not do it on purpose
