I think that Jesus was speaking figuratively. Many times in the Bible the sea is used as a metaphor for pagan nations. However, even if that's not what He was saying, He said that these things like wars and pestilences and such were the beginning of sorrows or birth pangs and in 2 Peter 3 we are reminded that a thousand years is like a day to the Lord, so only He knows how close we are to the end.

Many people look for signs and that's not bad as signs are there to verify things and to prove them legit and true. I don't think that katrina is one of those signs for when those signs come there will be no doubt that an unprecedented event has happened such that will cause the sun and moon to darken and many catastrophic events to happen all at once. There will not be any room for misinterpretation to those that are looking for the signs for they will be so evident there cannot be mistakes made.

Yes, look up Matthew 24: 1-14. In verses 7 and 8 it says their will be food shortages and earhtquakes one after another, and all these are the beginning of the pangs of distress. So you can see that all these things are the signs of the end of this system of things.

So what if they are? They could be signs that the world is going to end tomorrow or signs that it's going to end 1000 years from now. It's all speculation. If the end is supposed to come, it will and there's not a thing we can do about it. My suggestion would be to live each day as if it were your last and then you won't have any regrets.

What makes you think the world is going to end? Hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis, earthquakes, land and mud slides, flooding, and sinkholes are all natural disasters. These occur every year one or more times a year. I've seen red and orange moons, I've seen black suns which are solar eclipses and we are still here.
