Why don't you look up languages and find out.

One language in a country unites
Two -divide-------HISTORY

Than there is a money issue and a safety issue

So pride is getting some to say two here-no one says you can't know two that is nice--but for country unity-history tells us one is usefully

Look it up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is in many web sites.

And it is rude not to try to blend into another countries customs. If you went to France would you expect the people to cater to you.? No you try to learn their language it is respectful. No one says you must learn and many would be kind why you are learning-but to not try is wrong.

Here in this category it is a matter of pride-to push your point-when you know one language has purpose-but you don't want to face facts. Pride and selfishness.

I have no problem with there being two official languages in the US, as long as we can be sure that every citizen will be fluent in both languages. I don't think we can do that.

The biggest problem we have is that there isn't even one language. If we try to choose two, I think there would be a lot of uproar about which two. I understand the argument for Spanish, but the earliest settlers of the US (not the Spanish territories but the 13 original colonies) did not speak Spanish. There could be a very legitimate argument for another language to be chosen.

Louisiana officially has two languages, English and French. Everyone is expected to speak English, and we would like to see everyone speak French as well. It hasn't happened yet.

What do you mean? Spanish is the second most spoken language in the US. The US is the only country beside England that does not have a official language.

And Puerto Rico and New Mexico have both English and Spanish as official language.

And go to any large city in the US, you can watch TV in Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Korean, French, Chinese, and Hindu.

Enough Already on this! We can have 50 languages, unlimited languages but we NEED to have ONE official language. Speak in any language you want while here in the USA. We are free here! ...just be sure to know English so you can visit, work, play or be in the USA and benefit from what is here ...WITHOUT HANDICAPPING THE SYSTEM AND THE USA CITIZENS (WHO SPEAK ENGLISH!) by some freak approach that dictates we have to speak a bunch of different languages. It's senseless, STUPIDITY.
Sure, package your products and put the info in English, Spanish, Chinese ad nausea but when you sell your stuff in the USA you better put the info in ENGLISH, cuz that's our language.
I love other languages. Hablo Espanol mas e menus, bien. Halboando in Espanol no esta una problema. But it aint' right to have more than one official language, that should be the standard when you cross the border into the good ol' US of A.

I find it funny the that mendi8 says ignorance, because she was told on the Mexico yahoo site that it is rude to speak English and not the native Spanish. So, to answer your question, you need to learn English and you can still speak Spanish. My neighbor is from Germany and speaks English to everyone and German to his wife. It is called customs. If you went to another country, you would be expected to follow local laws, customs and language. It should not be so different in this great country of America.

No, we should have one national language .. and I think we all agree that should be English ... all other countries I know of have their own national language ... it is true that many Europeans speak many languages .. I daresay if you go to Germany or Sweden or wherever you will find that people speak English ... but ... at school, for jobs, for the bureaucracy, you are expected to know the national language!! If you want to continue speaking Spanish, or Swahili, or whatever, at home and to your friends, you are of course welcome to do that .. just don't expect anybody to have to learn YOUR language for YOUR convenience, or to spend tax payers money to print forms etc. in God knows how many languages ... the sooner we get an official, national language on the statute books, the better!!

English is the United States' language by de facto meaning that it's not "officially" our language, but it's accepted to be. Spanish should not be a national language because that help excuse the illegal immigration to our country.

This is the United States of America. What part of the word "United" do you not understand? Oh, I guess you don't read English, which is the language of this country. If you choose to speak, read and teach in another language, go ahead, just don't expect all Americans to learn your language just for your convenience, nor spend money to print extra copies or translate for you because you are too stupid or lazy to learn what we have inherited from our ancestors as our language of choice.

While we need an official language for obvious reasons, most white Americans are the only ones that are not multi-lingual. People from other countries speak several languages. It feels great to think and speak more than one language. It's pretty empowering.
