I have gone through this a few times. Boys definately harder than girls, and 20 months is still a little young to start. It can be done though. It is all about routine.
Most little ones just pee while asleep. Being awake is the time for having a good bowel movement.(LOL only on Yahoo! Answers! can we type this stuff)
Anyways after getting up , and eating breakfast, sit him on his trainer toliet. DO NOT use the regular toliet while training. Many little ones concentrate on just trying not to fall in on a big toliet. Sit with him and read a book to him. Or let him read. (where do you read your best magazines!) Time it for 20 minutes, and whether he went or not, praise him for trying. Do this just before lunch , an hour after lunch, and right after dinner.
Yes! This is very time consuming for you as well. Get him into a habit of saying "oh no" whenever he feels like going to the bathroom. Easy enough to teach. You say it everytime you have to go, and explain it while heading to the restroom. He may already have gone, but he will now start to realize when it is happening.
NEVER get mad at him for not making it to the bathroom. Always praise him for trying, and really celebrate with hugs and kisses when he does his business! It will take a little time, so you be patient. Good luck, sweetie!

just put him on the potty 20 min after he drinks something. Keep doing that all day long and he will get the hint. I did this to both of my sons.

You can always try. Keep it friendly and fun. We read them the library books and showed them the movies. We gave them small rewards for succeeding and were always proud when they went potty.
Having 2 Boys the earliest was trained at 30 months you can certainly start training but keep it fun and don't get discouraged.

Put cheerios in the toilet and try to get him to pee on them, or some place sells these little bullseye targets that are flushable for just that... Rewards...rewards....rewards and praise. My daughter would pee pee for a half a stick of gum... my sister's friend said her son would run to the bathroom just to tinkle for an M&M...
