My dog kind of swats at me she's being playful, but I was wondering if it means something when they do this because I've never known a dog to hit and I saw another retriever doing this on TV.

Y golden mix plays with my big 16 lb cat that way and the cat swats back..
she mainly uses her mouth to get attention, walks around with her mouth open and little love bites for me and the cat. The vcat and I are trying to break her of that habit.

It's usually to get your attention. I have a Golden Retriever who does it...and a Shepherd mix. I've also seen Boxers paw slap regularly to get attention.

My Lab mix doesn't paw slap...he chuffs. Has the same effect...it gets my attention.

Maybe they are similar to boxers in that way. That is why boxers are called boxers, because they use their paws in that fashion. I have 2, and it is really cute to watch.

She is not hitting - she is using her paws to play, she is trying to interact with you.
