What specifically changed, & how was it celebrated before The Hammer? I know what it represents now; I'm interested in Pre-Maccabean practices.

Hanukkah is the celebration of the successful Maccabean Revolt, as described in the books of I and II Maccabbees.

How could they have celebrated their victory over the Syrians before they had a victory?

You may want to re-think your question.....

Your question assumes that Chanukah was celebrated before the Maccabees and that it was "re-applied" to what happened at that time.

Well, I'm sorry, but that assumption is incorrect. There was no Jewish holiday at that time before the holiday was established in Maccabean times.

Perhaps you are confusing it with the practices of pagans at the time who celebrated the winter solstice.

Prophets only.....using a variation of pin the tail on the donkey they would "at random" poke idol worshipers in the eye and warn them of their futuristic visions then, score additional points by tricking the pagans into pulling their fingers.
