Kurt Vonnegut once wrote (maybe in Bluebeard) that the meaning the of life was, "to be the eyes, ears and the consciousness of the Creator."
That a pretty good answer but not quite on the mark.

I'm mostly OK with the muslim thing.
But what I have trouble with is:
What about the humans who lived before Mohamed was born? Was the whole human race lost before the start of Islam? That's why the non-believers cannot be lost. We are all children of God, if you choose to believe in God.

If you look at Maslow's hierarchy of needs, I think it corresponds with the human race and its expansion from material focus to spiritual beingness. Over time we've seen humanity's focus change from survival to emotional growth into the current age of mentality and mastering technology. We'll gradually see a shift of attention into the buddhic nature or intuition as we develop the abilities to think more abstractly and absorb principles like we now learn data and info. The focus changes as we learn and move forward. I don't think we're here so much to enhance awareness as to have experiences in awareness and expand in wisdom because of those experiences. Eventually we'll experience self-actualization as a race. I look at it as spirit immersed into dense matter to experience the journey of returning to spirit with a whole gamut of new experiences that couldn't be had as pure spirit. With this new found wisdom we will be better equipped to assist with other lifeforms and to move into new realms of experience.

Yup, that's what we are already. The meaning is realised ,but we don't believe it. There's no need for expansion, since there are an amazing variety of beings everywhere ,experiencing in every possible way. The information is getting through. the trick for us is letting go of the belief that we are this organism, this multi faceted organ of perception. Just as you don't need to expand your hearing for it to fully realise itself, the universe doesn't need to expand you for you to fully realise yourself !
What I have noticed, is that if you can clear away the clutter and beliefs, and see and respond with a clear mind, life fits together much better. It's as if you've found the radio station without the interference. the info gets through and life responds wonderfully. Although i for one can't count on that ,and am not ,it appears, currently in that space .Perhaps the attempt to use this fact is just more interference ?
Formal meditation is probably the best way to make progress in this direction,I would say, but also some martial arts, tai chi, qi gong, yoga, etc..are good ways too.

Ps: isn't Kurt Vonnegut great !?

I don't really have an answer for this question, but I'll tell you what I DON'T believe the meaning of life is. I don't see how people can think the meaning of life is JUST to survive and expand/multiply. Why do we really need to mate and maintain the survival of our race? Is it going to matter when we are dead? No. It COULD, we never really know. But the meaning can't be assumed. If you're going to answer, you need a definate. Survival is needed to live, it's not the meaning. That's the answer to the question "What is needed to live?". I think there is no definate answer though, I believe it is different for every person. The meaning of a persons life is based on the things they do and the things they want to do.

Life has no purpose, only resorts and meaning.
The resorts are fellowship and companion, so these deny the other and self importance on behalf of the meaning, just for looks.
The meaning of life is light insignificant friend enlightened.
Kurt Vonnegut did write that paragraph as an insult to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, she denied him a dance.
According to philosofy awareness is a meaningless analisys on development and performance of shadow allowance and diminished independence, it should evolve and grow wings as a way to shangri la and yompian. It sounds unreal, and sure is, in the future. Many have died to bring us this information. Sad loss of dogs and ticks I believe, sure manure is not affectionate or allowed to us, poor mortals on the brink of extinction.

I like Vonnegut's answer, but he does not talk enough about growth or transcendence. I really think we are part of the kosmos (with a k, not the one with a c - check out Ken Wilber), and than to learn and grow within this Kosmos. We are also here to connect with others, one of the best way to learn and grow. Learning is not enough, to grow with others in a community. The community might be on-line or at a studio or at the coffee shop - it does not matter really just be part of something and grow every day, month, year.

here is the purpose of evolutionary awareness as it pertains to moving toward god---

4-d math as physics and chemistry combined in human abilities of ways of living are as a personal understanding of the characteristics of spiritual and mental and physical patterns that pertain to who you are as an individual, so that you may learn to reunite with the whole.

9 of asceticism-- god, mystery, male, female, art, music, dance, yin, yang

6 in logic/intuition/emotion permutations== leader, innovator, mystic, psychic, comedian, specialist

3 in physical body, brain, chakra efficiency is this
Awareness Honesty Responsibility

by combining these you get 4-d personality infinitization, and that leads to 5-d self-realization of how to live the life that is for the fulfillment of the universal cosmic order

the 27 infinitizational robot characteristics are this-- euh... lemme break it down first...

-6 kinds of self-sustaining constant meditations-
Reality- Superman type violations of "physics"
Kriya- Immortality type ... this is my favorite btw- i no sleep ever
Power- Uri Geller talks about this a lot
Control- euh... don't really have examples, but morals factor in
Usefulness- morals for a staff, psychyousness for a bible
Able-ness- My guess is David Blaine, i mean holy-- !!! --

the 27 are just not describable, but one robot type that i associate/have made myself to become is rhombus 4-d
i do things of natural tendencies and then i flip the remote
to the right channel and wow my best friend just said that
and i just thought that and wow there was this guy i ran into

I'll write a book, i got some serious knowledge on physics of 4-d electricity folding too, i can make infinite energy circuits that are BASIC in advanced civilizations

Awareness about your own self - that will surely lead anyone to the consciousness of the Creator.

He also wrote in Timequake, I believe, that "we are put on this earth to fart around. Make no mistake about it." And so the question becomes how do you mesh the consciousness thing with the farting? Where is Kilgore Trout when you need him?

Your purpose here on earth is to be happy, learn, experience as a proving ground your time here, and then rise to heaven to be happy with your maker God for all eternity. And don't forget it. Or you might have to try again (in some religions).

We are already aware, so there is no point in enhancing awareness. The purpose of life is death and end of it all. Everything that has a beginning must and has to end.
