Rather than list different kinds of software individually, I thought you might find some links to great lists I've found on the internet.

http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=320017 -- the most extensive free software list I've found covering just about every need.

http://www.tinyapps.org/ -- mostly great freeware that uses very little of your system resources. highly useful.

http://100-downloads.com/ -- another great list similar to the first link.

As always, use caution when downloading any software. Probably 99.9% of free software is perfectly safe, but it never hurts to be careful.
