My mom was a piano teacher all her life, from age 10 to around 82. She always took only beginning students and turned them out when she thought they needed more highly skilled training, like from a school of music. She received a scholarship, while she was in H.S. to Julliard, and then studied at Chitaqua, NY. She was considered to be a concert pianoist although she never was an "on stage" performer all that much. She performed at supper clubs and the like, and in churches, and at Christmas time in events, and such. Oh well.
Word of mouth is going to be your best source of students pretty soon. In the meantime you may have to refer to other means, like use your computer to make up some simple one-page ads about yourself. Put these ads in appropriate places: like the libraries in your neighborhood, the museums, the churches, maybe even the grocery stores, but probably not just places like the laundrymats if you know what I mean.
I wouldn't recommend using the want ads in the newspapers because that can empty your pocketbook really quick when you haven't got any new "customers" yet. Just wait about that.
Word of mouth advertising will always be your best way to continue your quest. But that will come with time, you'll see.
Go for it. I wish I could follow your future. If anything I have told you has been of any great help, please let me know sometime in the future. Great luck to you; you might be my mom's replacement, her "doppleganger" if you will, as a young piano teacher! Enjoy your life. As I know you will.
And in the meantime, also please read this book: "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill. It will be the most unforgettable book you have ever read (except the bible maybe). You will find it in the self-improvement section of any bookstore. Buy the larger size book edition if you can, as it has a summary at the end of each chapter that will put things together for you. If this book were taught in high schools, this country would truly be a super power from now on. Getting rich doesn't just mean making a lot of money. You'll see why when you read the book. There is a great secret contained in the book. You might find it on the first few pages, or somewhere else, even toward the end chapters. That secret will be most important to you. As you read it, highlight the most important sentences in yellow. Then ask your spouse, boyfriend, significant other, to read it and highlight the parts that are significant to him/her in blue. The result will be green, of course, and will be your signal that you are thinking along the same lines in those areas. It can be your "bible" together for the rest of your life. Enjoy!
Many self-improvement seminars have been based on this book, including Dare to be Great, Challenge to America, and A Gathering of Eagles to name a few.
If you would ever want to ask me another question, I would be glad to help out if I can, just click on your email at jcorcor1999@yahoo.com I have 64 years of experience that could be of some help perhaps. I am a happly married man who will never be a threat to you in any way. If you need some advice, just ask again. It has been a pleasure just trying to help you.

You could advertise in the local classified under Service and/or Musical Instruments.
You can order you 250 Free Business Cards here; http://www.vistaprint.com/
May have to pay shipping, get your mom/dad to help you and get a good slogan maybe the have a free pic of a piano here. I looked at the Free cards, no piano but some good ones. Think and Plan the card well if you get them, you not get a second Free chance.
Below may be some Safe advice. IF, you could use a Cell Phone for contact instead of your home phone. Also, you could meet with prospective students at a Public Library or something and have your mom with you. You should really think safe, adults have to these days.

Find a local community center-type thing or grocery store and ask to put a flier up. Don't take any people much older then you. That's a good way to meet creeps. And filter them over the phone. Don't let out your address easily.
Oh, and good luck. =)

Usually people get students by referral from their teacher. If you study with a renowned teacher he will have a lot of people that want to study with him, but he can't handle them all, so he will pass some on to his best students. Can't hurt to ask him or her.

List yourself on www.craigslist.com, www.musicstaff.com
Also, if you have a school music program contact the teachers and say that you are available for students to contact you.
