Atkins hands down. 20lbs (all I needed to lose) and kept off for 4 years.
It is faster, and I have been able to transition from diet to low carb diet. My parents are diabetics and odds are too, I will have it if I don't watch my diet and exercise.
I'm in my mid-40's and have already seen how much better I feel, AND how much better my lab work is when I'm sticking with it.
Seriously, I went off at Xmas a few years ago and ate all the sweets that the holidays bring. My blood pressure and cholesterol shot up (never been high before or since), I was winded all the time and felt horrible.
Those who knock the diet really have not done their homework as even the nutritional gestapo are finally realizing that Dr. Atkins was on to something.
It's funny how people think the South Beach Diet is superior. There are some differences, but they are so close, too close to call. South Beach is a lot more work.
Anyhow...you can't lose more than a few pounds on any diet and keep it off, unless you make permanent changes.

Weight Watchers. It provides a balanced eating plan, not a fad, and coupled with exercise I lost an average of 2 pounds per week, until I reached my goal. I think Jenny Craig would offer a similar well balanced program, but would furnish you with the food in the event you don't want to make your own every day. I lost 20 lbs, my target, and I tend to go for 10-12 years before it creeps up on me again and I bite the bullet and do the same diet. Takes me about 6-8 weeks of self discipline and commitment, the first 3 days being the most uncomfortable as my stomach 'shrinks'.

Weight loss plans
The trouble with many diet and weight loss plans is that they take a one-size-fits-all approach that might not work for everybody. The personalized approach to dieting and weight loss makes sense because everyone is different, and everyone has different obstacles to overcome. It makes sense to have a diet and weight loss plan planned specifically for you.
Best move might be to work around the behavior that is impeding your weight loss. For example, if you are one of those people who just can’t go without dessert, you will do better if your weight loss plan includes a daily dose of sweet. There are many low fat, fruit based desserts that you can have without ruining your diet, or if you really crave a decadent dessert, you can cut calories elsewhere or up your exercise to make up for it.
When your plan is easy to follow and you have access to great recommendation in a helpful atmosphere, chances are that you will be able to take off that weight!
A weight loss plan of action must consist of a series of events that eventually leads to a healthy and toned body. A weight loss plan of action would answer the who, what, when, where and why. Weight loss is the straight result of planning and execution. Ensuring success is simple when a plan of action is created.

low carb worked really well along with 4 times a week at Curves. i lost 50 pounds for my wedding day. i have kept off all but 10 pounds (a year and half later).
i am now pregnant and hopeful to not gain a great deal (due to me still being "overweight") and back on this plan in 8.5 months.
