A hair pick, or a 'rake as it was sometimes known in the late sixties and seventies, is used for combing out very curly and kinky hair. A pick has longer teeth, that are set a little wider apart than standard combs, and has been used for centuries by African peoples. As African Americans embraced the 'Black Power' movement and adopted more 'Afro-centric' styles of dress, many decided to let their hair grow long and discontinue the use of hair-straightening products. The teeth of standard combs are, normally, too close together to pass through 'natural' or tightly curled 'kinky' hair without catching, causing pain and discomfort. The pick, designed to detangle the hair just as the standard comb, also lifts the hair away from the scalp creating the classic, airy, big-hair 'Afro' effect. Lately, here in the US, people of all ethnicities have come to appreciate the comfort and ease of the pick when styling their naturally curly or processed hair.
