Five months after joining I lost 16" as well as weight. I was able to go off one medication and reduce another. Drs. told me if I kept up I could stop one more and probably reduce or stop the other. No more back or knee pain. I feel energized for the entire day--used to take mid-afternoon naps, now I find something else to do, even if it's only relaxing and reading a book. I feel better about myself--mentally as well as emotionally.

It's the easiest way I've found to exercise. You can do it in all kinds of weather (unlike jogging or walking) and at any time of the day or evening when it's convenient for you. It's circuit/resistance training so you're not sore afterwards. The best part is that you do each machine or step platform for 35 SECONDS before moving on to the next. There's fun music playing that prompts you when to change. Also, there are breaks where you take a 10-second count to check your target pulse. They have charts on the wall with age ranges and the appropriate corresponding target percentages so you know if you need to speed up or slow down. Another great thing is there are no mirrors or men to distract you. You don't have to buy expensive work-out clothes--some women come in capris and a t-shirt, jeans and a shirt, or sweats. It's not a Barbie-doll contest.

They recommend you go 3 times a week for 30 minutes each time. Of course, if you want to go more often or stay for a longer period, you can. There are stretching exercises that you do afterwards that take only a few minutes, but feel so good afterwards.

The instructors will explain the program to you and you can observe the members working out and give it a try yourself. There's no sales pressure to join, but you are told the benefits and told about success stories.

In my group the women come in all sizes and shapes. You might walk in and feel uncomfortable to someone who looks great to you, but then you find out they've been coming for awhile and started out just like you are. They are friendly and supportive and even if you don't know them they will come over to say they've seen a change in you, you're doing great, they admire your determination, whatever. It's the biggest boost you'll get because unlike family and close friends they don't have to say it.

One woman comes with portable oxygen and keeps up with everyone else. That's the great thing about Curves--you start out with what you're comfortable doing and then build up time and endurance and strength before you know it.

They have travel passes so if you're on a business trip or vacation you may be able to find a Curves in that city. When you go that new place you sign in and they'll initial your pass and you get credit for it when you get home. It's fun to see how many times you've come in each month and then the total since you started. It's motivating.

You get measured (wt, ht, % body fat, and tape measured around different body parts) before you start your first workout. Each month you go through the process again. It's written in your chart and then put in the computer so you get a printout comparing you to the previous month and from when you started. It's more fun putting it on your refrigerator than your kids' artwork!

I almost forgot; they have various payment plans to suit your needs and accept credit cards. Sometimes they run specials. I heard of one now that if you are a member your teenage daughter can join for half-price, but check out what's available.

I'm a member. I've just hit my 300th visit. When I joined I was told their moto was "no men, no make-up, no mirrors".

Women of all sizes are very comfortable there. If you can committ 30min 3-4x a week, it will be money well spent.

I go immediately after work and before I go home. This way my big easy chair won't tempt me to stay!

Good luck

I was a member, but I switched jobs and I'm not near a convenient place to go anymore. The place that I went would let you go through the work out before you decided. I think you would like it, I did. I felt really energized afterwards. I also liked the fact that there wasn't any guys in there gawking at me while my boobies were bouncing up and down. lol

I am a member...the location that I go to is lots of fun with friendly people who work there and who work out there...my blood pressure has dropped from hypertension level to normal and I have increased strength in my knees and back and arms...there are women of all ages at our location ...from 15 to 82. There are no guys and no mirrors! Check out the website and call your local location to see if you can visit and do a trial workout.

No I'm not a member, I've heard some nice things about it tho. Many women like it because it's all women, they like the different stations. They work with you on a diet plan too.
