start with hot boiling water , add nothing but salt and butter, or
add "crawfish, crab or fish boil" to the water. you can buy this at the seafood counter it gives it a little more flavor and just drop it in until it turns a really bright red color . for faster steaming, put a top on it almost like a pressure cooker.

If it is live, you drop it into boiling water until the shell turns red. It is better to put a package of lobster boil in the water. The store where you get the lobster should also have cooking directions.

Boil a pot of water. Be sure to put some salt in it. When the water is boiling, put the lobster in the water and cook it. For lobsters that are 1 pound to 1 pound and a half, it takes about 15 to 20 minutes to cook.
Good luck! I have made couple of lobster dinners for my wife and my wife absolutely loved them.

Steamed Lobster
To steam lobsters, cook them, covered, in a steamer basket above boiling water. They will need 1 to 2 minutes less, as the steam is hotter than boiling water.
For 1 pound: 5 minutes
1 1/8 pounds: 6 minutes
1 1/4 pounds: 8 minutes
1 1/2 to 2 pounds: 8 to 10 minutes
more than 2 pounds : 12 minutes

If you live close to the sea, they say fresh sea water is the best.
If not then you will need to add lots of salt (6-7oz salt to 3pts water). have the water boiling, add the lobster and cook 10minutes per 1lb. The shell will turn bright red.
Some people say allow to cool at room temperature and some people say plunge is cold iced water to stop the cooking process.
I tend to do the latter and have good results.
I suggest you look at some internets sites for some seafood sauces to serve with your lobster or some recipes. There are thousands!
Good luck and bon appetite!

You can boil it. That's what I would do. I'm not an expert in cooking so you should probably look in a cookbook.

steam it. it has to be alive when you put it in or else you'll get like a disease because it's not fresh.. or.. you could grill it... i watched a show where they grilled soft shelled crabs.. looks a bit tricky. good luck.
