I'm not sure, but it doesn't really matter, does it? I mean, we are worshipping Jesus, not His picture. Good question though.

Christianity as a religion was not organized AND tolerated until after around 300AD, where it quickly spread to Greece and Rome then Europe. All white nations. Then in the 11th century (the Renaissance) the Crusades (convert to Christianity or die) kicked in and that is when these paintings/pictures of Christ became popular. Of course He was depicted as white because He was interpreted by nations of whites. Plus if you painted him in his true race- a Jew from the Middle East- you would be killed. Christianity had already become politicized by white nations even before the King James Version of the Bible (the one Christians use). So not only does the artwork we know now reflect the racial beliefs of Christianity's roots, the bible does too.
There are records in art history of Christ being depicted in his real color (dark skin) before the Renaissance- before the Crusades. You can google 'art history of Christ' or 'paintings of dark-skinned Jesus' and see what you find.
Sorry if this sounded like a boring history lesson! But it is history.
And FYI: I am mostly white and was raised Southern-Baptist. (I'm not anything now. Just spiritual). So I am not bashing anyone, just stating the facts!
*Peace*

Because the artists were white. People like to portray Jesus like they are. If He looked differently from other Jewish men, it most likely would have been stated in the bible because it would have been unusual, but since its not, that means He probably looked like a very normal Jewish man. In the later times, it looks like some artists got the idea of what He looked like from the Shroud of Turin, though its not proven the shroud was even His. The carbon dated says it's not, but there was a fire and the metal around the box it was in melted some, and the inside was wood, so experts say that could have effected the carbon dating. Just another mystery we're never gonna know the answer to. God is strange like that, not giving us absolutes, making us go on faith.

Jew don't look the same as they did back then. Semites had frizzy hair and dark skin. They look the way that they do now because of inter racial breeding. Just like the Egyptians were not always Arab. Think about it, would white people have became Christians if they new Jesus was not white?

I don't think GOD gave them picture's when HE inspired HIS writer's to write the WORD of GOD. The picture's come from Human Being Imagination's. JESUS was a Jew, and Iv'e been told they kept their hair shorter then today's men do. Samson was under a Vow to GOD so he had to let his hair grow, to maintain his strength to Defend Israel. Samson was a One-Man Army,Navy, Air-Force and the Marines! As long as he kept his side of the agreement (did not cut his hair) GOD kept HIS (gave him Super-Natural Strength to fight Israel's enemy's.) Jew's are in-between light-brown and dark-brown Human Being's. Hope this helps.

Obviously, you haven't been looking in the right places. In the southern baptist churches, you can find pictures of an african american Christ. And I think in some middle eastern areas, he's drawn like an arab. Depends on what the dominant race is. And the reason is by personalizing our prophet, we can feel cope with him better.
