Prayer in other tongues, the prayer language given by the Holy Spirit at the baptism into Him, is a free gift available to every believer who receives the Promise of the Father: the Holy Spirit.
Often this is confused with the spiritual manifestation of kinds of tongues, one of the nine spiritual manifestations of the Holy Spirit (I Cor. 12:7-11). This manifestation of the Spirit is used through a believer as He wills. We cannot "operate it at will" because "all these work that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will."
Consider this analogy:
Your primary, native language (most likely English) can be spoken by you any time you wish.
In the same way, the private prayer language given by the Spirit is operated the same way. It is a language we can speak freely anytime we wish (I Cor. 14:5,18); the difference is, it is the Holy Spirit supplying the words of the language. We have not consciously learned it. We open our mouth, begin to speak, and He fills it with the words (Acts 2:4). It is a free gift we all receive when baptized in the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4,39, 10:45-47, 19:6).
Now consider the manifestation of prophecy. It is the same language as your native language, yet you are not able to express it whenever you will. The Holy Spirit supplies the words, even though they are in your own language, whenever He wishes to use you in that manifestation (I Cor. 12:10).
This compares to the manifestation of kinds of tongues (I Cor. 12:10). The Holy Spirit supplies the words, when He wishes to use you in this way. You cannot "do it at will" anymore than you can prophesy "at will" (I Cor. 12:30).
The manifestation of different tongues is used to edify and build up the church, when it is accompanied by the manifestation of interpretation of tongues (I Cor. 14:5,6).
Therefore, its use is intended to be in the presence of other believers (I Cor. 14:13). For this reason, not everyone will necessarily be used by the Spirit in this way, and it is regulated in the Church for those who are (I Cor. 12:30,31, 14:18,19,26-28,37-40).
The free gift of the prayer language in other tongues is used to edify and build up oneself (I Cor. 14:4, Jude 20, Isa. 28:11,12).
It does not need to be interpreted, for it is directly edifying the one praying, because it is intercession by inspiration of the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:26, I Cor. 14:2). For this reason, its use is confined to private prayer (I Cor. 14:2,18,19,28), and thus is not regulated (I Cor. 14:37-39).
Hopefully, this will clear up the confusion over the appearance of "tongues" in the Bible. Just as our normal language can be used by us at will, so can our private prayer language can be used by will. Likewise, the Holy Spirit leads us to prophesy when He wills, as He may choose to use kinds of tongues as a manifestation, as He wills.

There are two types of tongues.
There's the tongues that you will speak when you receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, and there is the gift of tongues for the edifying of the Church.
The first is often called a prayer language because you may do this after receiving the Holy Ghost during praise or prayer and it's edifying only you.
The second is aloud and is usually followed by someone who has the gift of interpretation interpreting what the unknown tongue message for the Church was. Another way for God to speak to his people!
The Bible says to not forbid it: 1 Cor. 14:39
It is for you and your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord shall call.

Hello JimmieHendrix05.. :)
Yes and No..
Prayer language is between you and the Lord and it is also considered speaking in an unknown language (tongues)..this is a sign for a believer..
1 Corinthians 13
1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
===============================================
The tongues in Acts 2..
Were a sign not for believers, but for non believers, because the apostles were unlearned men and the crowd knew this, that is why they were so astounded when they heard them speak in their own language..
Right now I am studying the Book of Acts..I am taking a course toward the work the Lord has called me (missionary)..
In Jesus Most Precious Name..
With Love..In Christ..
ADDITIONAL:
I speak in a prayer language..God also gives me the interpretation..

Speaking in tongues is speaking in known languages, for two purposes: 1) The spread of the Gospel to the whole world. (Now that's an easy way to do it!) and 2) As a sign to the Jews that God was blessing this Christianity.

I have heard people speaking in tongues and they do it while they are praying. But when others pray they speak their spoken language. When they speak in tongues, I have seen on Discovery shows that it is not a known language that has been recorded and no one knows what is being said. Sometimes the person has no recollection of doing it. When I have heard it, it sounds like the same couple of phrases is being repeated over and over.

Speaking in tongues IS speaking another language. I know that God wouldn't want his disciples or anyone for that matter speaking in Aremaic when they are in another country that doesn't speak the same. If you didn't know English, how much would it be worth to you if you were given the gospel in English? NONE! It's that simple. Prayer language which is from your heart is what is used to communicate to God.

yes it is.....I speak in tongues and there are different times when one speaks in tongues...one can do it under the unction of the Holy Spirit in a corporate setting and then God will release someone else or the same person to give the prophetic revelation of what was just spoken to the BOC present....now the way you are referring is for the lifting up of the individual and I do this daily in my personal prayer time.....it is actually one of the greatest examples of faith being released because the Holy Spirit is praying for you.......it is real....

there are two "languages" that are considered. One is a prayer language, only your Father knows what you are saying but you are speaking on His level. There is also languages on earth that can be spoken but never learned.
Acts 19:6
And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
1 Cor. 13:1
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
1 Cor. 14:21-22
In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. [22] Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
1 Cor. 14:39
Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
1 Cor. 14:14-16
For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. [15] What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. [16] Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?

Yep, they are both made up. They are both fantastic lies made up to further seperate "believers" from rationality. By taking the step to "speak in tongues" you are giving up a very big piece of your individuality in order to participate in the mass hallucination. This is classic smoke and mirrors mysticism designed to convince people that THEY are the only person in the room who doesn't understand the speaker of "tongues", and as a result - everyone pretends it has meaning and significance.
