I read a horrific story in Sahih Bukhary [226 & 5254] and also in Sahih Muslim [3162]. The story is about some people who had some illness and threfore prophet Muhammed sent them with his servant to drink camel urine and milk. Once those people became just fine, they killed the servant and stole the camels. Prophet Muhammed sent his companions to arrest them and he cut off their legs, hands, and eyes and he threw them in the desert until they died by hunger, thirst and heat.
I am not arguing the crime those people committed. My question is about the horrible, inhumane punishment. Was not prophet Muhammed (who had the wonderful teachings about mercy) supposed to simply kill them instead of that horrific torture?

Don't trust what you read. As you can see the hadiths (traditions) from Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim are not correct. Use your reasoning and you will realize that when something so illogical is said about the Prophet, it is said to ruin his reputation as an advocate of peace. These attempts at weakened the faith of Muslims are made by none other than the enemies of Islam.

Listen. Mohammad was a real person. He had a real life. He died a real death. You really should read up on his life. I am not Islamic. I am just saying from a general educational level only. It is good to get a feel for different religions so you can understand how they feel. Mohammad lived in what is now called Saudi Arabia. He lived in Medina as I understand it. That is north of Mecca the capital. People in his time worshiped Genii and spirits and all kinds of things. Mohammad goes into a cave with a secretary for a long time. He speaks the Koran and the secretary writes it down. When he is finished he comes out of the cave. He leads a violent overthrow of the existing governments in Medina and Mecca. Basically Islam spreads outward from tribe to tribe and land to land from this point. Conversion is accomplished by the sword. Either the person converts or is killed. I did not answer your question did I?

If you kill someone's legs and hands in the desert, they are not going to die from hunger and heat, I don't even think they will have time to get hungry, thirsty or even hot. So as you can see, the story doesn't add up.
It is a good example why the people of the world shouldn't take literally what it says in those ancient mythological books.

Torture and horrific death was used in those days to make the point that to defy the ruler meant a really bad hair day for the accused. Public executions were the order of the day to let any and all know what would be their fate for transgressions...

Here are Hadiths that this lair is using to make a false claim:
Sahih Muslim 3162:
Anas b. Malik (Allah he pleased with him) reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: O Allah, increase in Medina twice the blessings (Thou showered) on Mecca.
Sahih Bukhari 226:
Narrated Abu Wail:
Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari used to lay great stress on the question of urination and he used to say, "If anyone from Bani Israel happened to soil his clothes with urine, he used to cut that portion away." Hearing that, Hudhaifa said to Abu Wail, "I wish he (Abu Musa) didn't (lay great stress on that matter)." Hudhaifa added, "Allah's Apostle went to the dumps of some people and urinated while standing."
Sahih Bukhari 5254:
5254. It is related that Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab heard from Abu Hurayra report that during the Night Journey, at Jerusalem the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was brought two cups, one of wine and one of milk. He looked at them and then took the milk. Jibril said, "Praise be to Allah who has guided you to the natural form! If you had taken the wine, your community would have erred."
