Not really, that's real cheap. i used to pay $525/month just for heat and hot water. besides if you want to be independent you have to learn some way. Success!

We have a 19 year old living with us. He pays $250 a month for his small room and utilities--and that is awfully cheap for this area. He also pays for his own food, personal items he wants, cell phone, car insurance, etc. At $150 a month, that wouldn't even pay for a month of food--especially for an 18 year old! Where in the world would you get that kind of an awfully cheap deal? Are you still staying with your parents or what? You NEED to learn to pay for rent, utilities, food, etc so you can learn to be responsible.

Ummmm, ok... so I'm a bit older than 18, and well - $150 a month including utilities and food? When can I move in? Heck no it's not too much! It's a bargain! (for the record, I'm not really interested in moving in) - but wow - If I could find a deal like that here? Sign me up! Tell ya what - if you include car insurance with that $150, we've got a deal, K?

I don't think $150 is too much as long as you are teaching respect for money and responsibility. However, it also depends on the circumstances. I would suggest you develop a budget together, considering any car payments the 18 year old has, insurance, the "want list" so that there is understanding of what it takes to live on their own. If it isn't necessary for them to pay the rent unless it's for a tool to teach, then don't. Or you could have them pay it and put it away in a savings for them. This will ensure that they are saving their money and you can hope that they will follow your example.

I don't think it is too much, assuming that you have some sort of income. I believe that your parents are trying to teach you what is like out in the real world. And there is NO way you could get rent, utilities, food for $150. if you were out on your own.

Not if you have a job that easily allows you to pay that much. I've always been told the rule of thumb is you should be able to cover your rent with 1 to 1 and 1/2 paychecks. When you're out on your own with a mortgage to pay and all of the utilities your gonna be looking at least 1,200 a month if not more. Enjoy it while it lasts and if possible SAVE, SAVE, SAVE!!!!!!

I assume it's your parents charging you the rent. I see nothing wrong with it. If a parent (or parents) still have to deal with adult children at home, there's no reason they shouldn't finally be recieving some sort of compensation for it (minors are different, they're a parents responsiblity an adult should be learning the ways of the world)
I just turned 25, I have a kid and thousands of dollars in medical bills from my bought with cancer. I'd give anything to find a place for $150/month. Count your blessings.

Not at all, that's cheep! Feel lucky your parents aren't asking for $300 or more, and NO UTILITIES or FOOD.
Look, you're an adult, but still sucking off Mommy and Daddy. Why are you complaining?
When I moved back in with my parents for a brief time after my divorce, I had to pay $300 and had to pay a rotating amount on the utilities. Not to mention I still had to get my own childcare.
So, suck it up and be a responcible adult. You're not a baby anymore.

It depends on how much they make and if the use the utilities on a over regular basis(phone etc.)I have my step son who's 19 years old and he pays me and my husband $300 a month because he love to be on the telephone and he has a child that's there on a regular.

That depends, who are you paying that to? If you're renting your own place and getting all that stuff...that's a BARGAIN!!! However, if your parents are charging you that, then I dont know. I dont their situation. Maybe they dont make much money and need you to help contribute now that you're 18...I dunno. Or maybe they are trying to teach you the value of money. Either way, $150 isnt much at all, but for someone who lived with her parents and never had to pay for anything, it just seems a little odd to me if you have to pay your parents, but then again, every family is different.

I never agreed with children having to pay rent unless the family is needy or in dire circumstances unless the child hits the age of 23 or older. Than I would say compare the price to that of what it would cost to have your own place and than decide.
