Perhaps that person comes from a background where "smacking" is considered okay. Many cultures including the Chinese and Korean consider that permissible table manners. It may be irritating to you, but perhaps your eating in silence (the western "chew with your mouth closed) indicates to that person that you aren't enjoying your food. I think in all matters regarding personal habits it is best to approach the other person with love and caring rather than attacking. For example, saying, "Can we talk about something? I don't mean to be rude to you or tell you what to do, but there is something I just can't seem to handle very well." After all, it is you that are having a problem -- not the other person. Good luck.

At a time when they are not eating. Just say, "Do you know what drives me crazy, when people smack while they're eating. It is disgusting. What is your pet peeve?" They will say something and not know you are talking about them, but the next time you are eating together they will remember what you said and realize to be courteous.

Start doing it yourself in an exaggerted fashion. The offender will soon get the message. If he doesn't, he's a real clod and you should move to another location.

Shove your open palm in their face and say "okay, spit it out!" That's what my friend did one time in high school. Some chick who sat behind her was chomping on her gum, and she got so fed up with it that she turned around and held out her hand and told her to spit it out. It was funnier than sh*t! Everyone thought she was the biggest b itch after that, but I thought it was hella funny.

It's probably too late to teach them anything about etiquette.

Can you please chew a little more quiet?
Can you please stop smacking?
There's always the option of pretending it doesn't bother you.
