Is there an issue with keeping the baby's (toddler) head straight with the sissors? What about keeping them still in a high barber chair? I know this is a stupid question, but something I don't know and need to find out.

We got our boys' hair cut at one year at the barber. I suggest going to the barber on a busy day like Saturday and find a barber that is good with children. Some of them just do the cut and work around the wiggly baby, some will help you entertain him while they cut and others will just get frustrated and tell you if they don't settle they won't be able to cut his hair. Obviously you want to find one of the first two types! Then go back when it isn't busy so they don't have to rush through the haircut. The barber should allow you to hold him. If not hold him, they have seats that they set in the chair that holds them up and you just stand by him.

My son was only 7 months old at his first hair cut...I took him to my hair dresser and he sat in a booster seat in her chair. I took his favourite toy and since he was in love with cheerios at the time, I had a whole baggie full and kept feeding him those. She took her time and we didn't hold his head still or anything. An experienced hair dresser is used to their clients heads moving and will be careful. He is now 2 and goes to her regularly. She says he's better behaved than most 5 or 6 year olds she has!
The key is to use someone you trust so that your child feels comfortable too.

In some cities, there are places that specialize in children's hair cuts.
I just took my 2 year old to a salon and stood beside him, asking him to look in the mirror, up, down, or whatever. I held his hand when he was scared, and he did pretty well. Just look for someone that has patience to cut the hair.

As soon as they can sit on their own they can go and get their haircut... but i would find a place that is good with small children... my youngest got his first haircut around 10 months... we gave him a sucker to help him sit stiller and it worked out great... we have taken him in every couple of months since then and we dont have any problems at all.. he even gets the clippers used on him..

There are some salons that are just for children. They have car or airplane chairs, give lolipops, etc. Try to find one of those. I think my son was almost 2 when he got his first cut in a salon. Before then, we did it ourselves.

I always cut my son's hair when he was sleeping; didn't take him to a salon until he was about 5 or 6; I cut his hair "regularly"(not sleeping), when he was about 2 1/2 years old.

with mine, after age two, with a lot of candy involved. I have found it better when the daddy takes them - he can get his hair cut and show the child that it's no big deal
