Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD).
Some people (rarely) have contracted CJD while conducting post-mortem examinations.
The leading scientific theory at this time maintains that CJD is caused by a type of protein called a prion. Prion proteins occur in both a normal form, which is a harmless protein found in the body’s cells, and in an infectious form, which causes disease. Normal sterilization procedures such as cooking, washing, and boiling do not destroy prions.

One of my instructors worked at the Alzheimer's program at Johns Hopkins and they did "brain autopsies" a lot and everyone had to take a lot of precautions when CJD was suspected.

Ebola, cholera, plague, smallpox, mad cow, HIV, hepatitis, some types of cancer and probably numerous other infectious diseases.

The "how long" part of your question would just be idle speculation but the simple answer would be until the body is cremated or buried.

If a person is buried that has not been embalmed and the body has cholera the cholera never dies.

I know Ebola does-- for how long I am not totally sure, but at least a week.
