I was surprised at the negative responses this question received. I'm fine with people wanting to make their life in America, I believe it has to be done legally, but as an American, I'm proud of my country and can see why someone would want to make a life there. However, I also believe that when you decided to make your life in another country, you should learn the language, especially if you're going to work! It will benefit the immigrant to learn the language so they can live a productive life! I'm not like many people who think that only English should be spoken in the US. But yes, if you're out in the working world, or going to school, just to get around the city, you need to know how to communicate! And I feel that way about ANY country that ANY person decides to live in or visit!
For Ina who posted her answer to this question by saying that Americans go to other countries and think the people there should speak English, and if they don't we think they are ignorant. Well Ina, I'm a US military wife and we are stationed in Italy. I'm around a lot of Americans and Italians. As a matter of fact, we decided to live off base so we could learn more about the Italian culture. But my point is this, I haven't seen any Americans, rather they are military or just visiting here, get angry at an Italian who doesn't speak English. And we don't think they are ignorant or stupid. I haven't seen that in any of the other European countries I have been to either. And if there is some American that does feel that everyone in other countries should know English, well, then they are an idiot for saying that! Italian is hard, but I learned it out of respect for these people. I'm living in their country, and I owe them the respect to at least try and communicate with them. You said that the person who posted this question to begin with is the reason you want to go back to Europe. Well, then go. We sure don't want to keep you in the US if you're not happy there.

It should be a requirement to know/learn English in America. It is our national language. I think that is more important than the citizenship test. Unfortunately, the wrong things are stressed when an immigrant enters our country (ex. knowing how many members there are in the House of Representatives). I don't even know that!
If I went to France, I would learn French. It is kind of obvious. Unfortunately, a lot of immigrants that move her don't get that.
I once saw a woman arguing in Spanish at the driver's test station, and she was mad that the test wasn't in Spanish. I wanted to say, "the road signs are in English!" I have never seen a Spanish road sign. If you cannot read the road signs, you are a hazard to the road.
ALTHOUGH, I do think it is a very good thing to know more than one language. The U.S. is definitely a melting pot of many cultures and languages. I have taken 7 years of Spanish (high school and college), and I find it very beneficial.
I also think that America would be much more accepting of new cultures if they were willing to TRY and adapt to our culture (ex. learning English).

I totally agree with you, people who visit other countries SHOULD learn the language to be an Ambassador of their own. For instance, I was in the Army in Germany and had to learn the local language. Even though many Germans speak better English than I do.;)

Most people who go to another country would try to learn that country's language. It is the polite thing to do to try to get along. It would be rude and selfish to expect them to learn yours. That doesn't mean they would be impolite to those learning. Or someone older. But it is rude not to even try or expect others to change for you.
One language for a country has purpose. In this issue of immigration-they are using it for their own selfish point.

They can and do whenever possible, you have to understand that alot of immigrants have such a good work ethic that they work more than one job. When you are working all the time, when can you find time to study? Also, how many immigrants have you helped teach? If you want them to speak English so much, then offer to help them! If you dont want to, then stop bitching about it! Seriously, there are more important things to worry about in life!

I certainly hope that you are bilingual if you have any plans to travel...
What bothers me even more are people who can't manage to mutter a single phrase in English with correct grammar and yet they command everyone else to "speak their language".
Furthermore, the USA primarily speaks English which is not native to the land... try to learn Cherokee or Navajo.
