It's the nature of human beings to compete with each other while growing -- in fact most vertebrates exhibit this characteristic.
As adults, they might outgrow this and get along fine... except...
If, as parents, you favor some siblings over others, the un-favored child may not forgive anyone and may stay cold and distant until there's no one else left alive.

I don't know but I have this theory that sibs born 18 months apart stand a very good chance of hating each other's guts until adulthood.
Try to put a few more years in there :)
Of course, I had four brothers, and the oldest three were approx. 18 months apart each and were like best friends and still are. My youngest brother and I on the other hand were born several years later, 18 months apart from each other, and HATED each other growing up. We did NOT get along at all and I even said when I grew up I was going to have tons of cats (he's allergic) and never speak to him again. Well now we're friends and even share a house and go to the same university. I wish I had a good answer for you. Best I can offer is try not to show any favortism. Other than that I really don't know what could have helped us! I'm glad we're ok now though :) Family is precious.

Sibling rivalry, maturity, ect.
Its not that they dont get along, its that age plays a big factor.
If you have an 8 year old and a 5 year old the 8 year old will try to take command because he/she feels its his/her place in the household to command the younger sibling, and the younger sibling may have went along with it at a younger age but where the mind is developing a sense of independance thats when the rebellion will start against the older child.

Oh really? I know of some families where it's just the opposite; sad but true. Fortunately, mine is not like that. My brother and I love each other even though he stole my lollipop and made me cry when I was a baby....LOL

I always got a long with my siblings at a younger age but when I got older I started to have problems because they think they can have something to say about my life. So my prob is opposite i guess.

Its the pecking order, or where they fit in to "the pack" at that age. The yare just learning all their lifes social skills and it is totaly normal. Thats why it is important to teach them when they are young how to act towards one another and people in general. What you teach them now will eventualy sink in ,they will learn it, as they mature! It will get better.

It's b/c they live together. It takes a lot to be around someone 24/7. As soon as one moves out- they'll get along better

I think sometimes they do it because it is expected. It seems when friends and other people are around mine seem more apt to not get along!!! As adults I think they finally value that family sticks together and friends come and go.....

its a survival mechanism that everything is theirs (we are animals and thats how they behave)
after about 5-7yrs old its just that their little bro or sis is annoying them and teenagers - worse- everything is theirs, everyone annoys them and the world is against them.
as adults we just want to function well in society, we know whats ours and we too are probably parents thus we then sympathize with our own parents for what we put them through.
just a theory!

from what i can see, it's just immature competition. As they grow up and become independent they come into their own and have no reason to compete but figure out that they are on the same team (family)
