There will always be someone in Iraq who will want to blow up civilians to make a point.
There are still people like that in Ireland, even though the IRA has become part of the political peaceful process.
There are still people like that in Spain. even though ETA has realised that terrorism is out of fashion in the west.
There are still people like that in Sri Lanka, even though the Tsunami proved that Tamils and the governement could work together.
There are still people like that in Kashmir, even though that is the closest the world is to a nuclear conflict between two major military powers.
The only way that an insurgency or terror campaign can be marginalised is when the people...the civilians...the locals..make it clear that people with guns and bombs do NOT do it in their name, and will NOT be sheltered by them.
That will only happen when the Iraqi government forces can maintain order well enough for people to have the confidence to do that.
Then our troops can come home.
You make very disparaging and disingenuous comments about the military which you say you used to serve in. The fact is that it is impossible for any military force to be 100% effective against a terrorist who hides in the civilian population.
If a soldier is on patrol in Bagdad, he will encounter probably 500 men a day who are all dressed the same in civilian robes and sandals. One of them will have a bomb strapped to his chest or an AK47 in his robes.
What do you want them to do, treat everyone as if they are the one with the bomb or gun, or show some empathy and take the risk of being blown to bits?
We are asking our troops to do a very difficult police job and you criticise them when they let the insurgents get close enough to kill them, and you criticise them when they make a mistake and confuse an insurgent for a civilian.
We all know you want the troops home, as we all do at the right time, but calling them names when they are risking their lives is just pathetic.

The 'resistance' (actually a lame term for a bunch of thugs who want to replace the legitimately-elected Iraqi government with a dictatorship) are fading away.
What 'erudite' knows but does not tell you is that tracking the war in Iraq means looking at trends. For example: the trends of the effectiveness of the terrorist attacks is declining. The growth and effectiveness of the Iraqi security forces is increasing.
When they started the 'resistance' focused on military attacks - now they are desperately engaged in a losing strategy of terror attacks on civilians. (Note that whenever a 'resistance' group has had to turn from attacks on military targets and switch to civilians - they have _never_ won.)
The trend is that the "resistance" is becoming weaker over time.
Learn some history 'erudite.'

Your wrong about the military, it might sound like they are weak but we are still very good at war, its the diplomacy that screws every thing up. There are certain rules to war you know, then there is the media that tells everything that we do in the wrong light. How long will it go on? As long as we are there. You might think those rag tags would be easy to take out...volenteer for the Military or better yet Goto Afghanistan as a tourist and you will change your mind. Its a different culture

I have every respect for a military that fights within the rules of war when the enemy don't, our military is not the problem. It is the poor leadership, the resistance as you call it could last for 100 years as long as the shia and sunni fo not like each other there will be fighting.

What you have said we as a nation learned in Nam. Some in our Government never grasp even a simple lesson. The Iraqis will fight for another ten years, each side there wants the oil money. No matter what we do in Iraq it is Iran who will control Iraq in the end.
This is your lesson for today. No terrorist would dare face a Marine in a fight, they do the dirty work behind our boys backs, just like in Nam. Terrorist are cowards, they will not fight man to man. The number of terrorist in Iraq is very small most are in Afghanistand.

Pitiful American military, huh? I guess its lucky for us that a peice of crap like you isnt a soldier or Marine. First off, they wouldnt let a sniveling little impotent turd like you in, and second, if they did, all you'd do is what all traitors do. Run to the enemy, and try to save your own worthless hide. When you die, traitor, every single American serviceman, current or former, is going to line up and spit on your grave. The thought that garbage like you once wore the uniform makes me sick. You degrade and desecrate everything that America stands for. It's unfortunate that the constitution that I and others like me have fought to protect is being manipulated by scum like you. Judgement day will come for you, traitor, soon.

The resistance will last until they cannot find anyone else to resist. Either that or until everyone who resists is dead.
