I have had him since he was a kitten and he has always been skittish any way to make him more friendly?

Your cat has been with you longer than your son, so he"s being possesive of you. Some cats adore children & some cats simply tolerate them. Just make sure the two are supervised and talk to your vet or an animal behaviorist. Good luck, hope I helped!

Sounds like a couple of things could be happening here. Your cat may not have been properly socialized. Proper socialization starts when your kitten is a few months old. After that his behavioural patterns are set when encountering a new person. If he was always skittish, you may not be able to change it. It could also be how your son treats the cat. Rough handling and loud noises will scare the cat away. You may just have to wait until your son gets older before your cat can tolerate him.

Cats can be possessive of their owners, and sometimes they don't like other people no matter what. I have a 2 year old cat that hides under the bed whenever anyone else is over. All my cats are jealous of attention anyone else is getting. If he's skittish, the energy of a 5 year old probably won't help him feel more comfortable. If you can get your son to try and play with the cat when he's calm, that could help. And I like one of the previous ideas of a bribe. If your son comes with treats or a favorite toy, that could help.

Most cats set their ways as kittens and each cat comes with their own individual personality's.If your cat was skittish and not very playful towards your son when he was a baby it is highly unlikely your cat will change it's ways now.Cats are by nature picky and that comes with all aspects of their style right down to the food they eat to where they will sleep.Sincerly.L.P.

When I was five, the only cat that could stand me was a cat that was blind and deaf. Teach your son good habits around animals, make sure he knows not to pull tails or whatever, and give it some time. Once your son is older the cat will get used to him.

Their isn't any way to make your cat anymore friendly. My husbands kids are always harassing my cats and now they go and hide under the bed in my room. Does your son harass the cat? Try to get your son to sit in one place for a while and see if the cat will come to him ( i know that may be hard to get him to sit in one place for a while) but try it and see if it works.

Some cats will never warm up, I would not force it. As long as the cat is not aggressive towards your son, I would just let it be.
One thing you could try is having your son help you feed the cat. Let him put the food in the bowl. This helped me train my cats to tolerate my husband.
Good Luck!!

When I brought home my first child, my cat was 2 years old. He hissed at her and for 3 months wouldn't go near me or her. He forgave me, then claimed my lap back even when I was nursing. But he didn't show her affection until she was 5 or 6. After I brought home my 2nd child. Repeated soft, gentle love and maybe a special treat just from your son.

Give it time. Five year olds tend to pull hair or get excited, causing kitty to be nervous. I'm sure you are teaching him to be good to kitty, but he simply can't help being five.
