That may be a misnomer, since I don't think we love ourselves either.
If we loved ourselves as the unique creatures we are, we would not be abusing ourselves with inappropriate behavior and addictions that bring us horrendous consequences. People would not feel the need to act arrogant or superior to others, or be filled with envy and greed. There would be no crime because we would have all that we really need without causing harm to others.
We only judge others by what we have seen or perceive to be lacking in ourselves.
Once we learn to accept ourselves and feel worthy, we will no longer have those divisionary traits. We will not feel a need to compare and outdo. Once free of useless pride, we will not have to measure up to the demands of other individuals, nor demand that others measure up to our ideas. We will be content that all people have their own path and challenges to overcome, and we all move at a different rate of speed. We will then be able to see the godspirit in everyone.
So in answer to your question.................I'm afraid we do exactly that..........we love each other as we love ourselves. That's pretty sad isn't it?

becasuse we love ourselves way too much - we should honor one another above ourselves but we are selfish and often put our own wants and desires even above someone else's needs. When we can take our eyes off of ourselves for what we want and start ministering to others and stop pointing the finger at others and change what is in ourselves that is wrong then we will see a better balance
Most importantly it is because it is the love of self that is in us and not the love of Christ!

Basic animal instinct. Survival of the fittest. We know that if we have the very best of what is available, we will have a better chance of survival. Ok, that worked during our cavemen days, however we haven't outgrown our "basic animal instincts" when we became humane.
We know that if we have the bigger piece of cake we'll have a better chance of survival because we won't be as hungry later on, which can give us an edge. This also translates to other things, material things... which comes from the "if I have a better hammer/weapon I won't have to waste so much valued energy and I'll have a better chance to survive."
Love has absolutely nothing to do with it. That is an emotion that is too "humane" for it to have any effect on our basic survival instinct.

Do we really love ourselves? Enough to forgive ourselves for the bad things we've done? Enough to accept the fact that we sometimes fail? Enough to treat our bodies well and avoid abusive behaviors? Enough to give ourselves the gifts of healthy relationships with those we love? If we can do these things for ourselves, we will be able to do them for others.

You're working under the assumption that everyone loves themselves in the same way. There are people who are into S&M, torture, self-mutilation, among other things. You don't necessarily want everyone to love others as they love themselves.

i think its not about loving ourself, its just being selfish. Couldnt u do anything for ur mom or dad? i could.. But if u r talking about gf or bf, it depends, how much understandable i can be, and how much i can tolerate some of the partners behaviour i dont like.
