The percentage is rather small. However, the reason why the national health institute of any country will always be against smoking is that if you re-phrase your question and ask what percentage of people with lung cancer are smokers, the answer is close to 90%.
There seems to be evidence showing that there is a genetic predisposition to lung cancer that will be triggered by cigarette smoke. If you don't have this genetic background and smoke, your chances of getting lung cancer are really small. However, if you DO have this genetic background and smoke, will most certainly develop lung cancer.
However, cigarette smoking increases the changes of developing a lot more types of cancer than just lung.

Don't spread this fact around, but it is less than one percent. But it is far higher in smokers than in non smokers. More damage is done to lungs in terms of emphysema than lung cancer. And don't forget the damage to the vessels to the heart, which cigarette smoking accelerates.

i'm particular you would be basically superb. There are people who've smoked 1000's of cigarettes and not had lung maximum cancers yet the two some who've maximum cancers and on no account smoked. besides the fact that if or no longer maximum cancers is the main significant situation there are various unfavourable outcomes of smoking so that's undesirable for you. I smoked for almost 40 years and stopped my recommendation is do no longer start up. little doubt some expert will inform you that one cigarette will take some seconds off your existence yet i would not worry approximately it.

A good percentage, but non smokers can also get cancer. The smokers get other lung diseases also like emphysema, chronic obstructive airways disease. I still smoke, daft I know!
