Sounds a lot like witness tampering.  Then again, I'm an engineer, not a lawyer; I can't tell you what horrors are allowed by our "justice" system these days, and I'm not sure how much I want to know.

yes if it is only reimbursement for missed work time and travel expenses otherwise it would be buying a witnesses testimony,but the prosecution can also subponae this person as a hostile witness and pay them nothing
