We got a kitten recently and our cat we've had for a few years doesn't seem to be accetping him. She, the old cat, hisses and get pissed off when he's in the room with her. Any suggestions to help them get along?

Went through this just a few months ago when I had to replace one that died.

Just let them sniff each other out at their own pace. The old one feels like their territory is in trouble and hisses to protect it and warn others of the boundary.

Sometimes giving them a can of cat food on seperate plates but in the same room helps. Each feeding move the plates in little by little.

My older cat took 5 weeks for her to finally accept the new kitten. She was mean, would smack the kitten, push her off the bed, you name it.

Now they are the best of buddies, sleep together, share a window together and run around here like 2 freight trains out of control.

Just don't force them. If the older is being mean or smacking just say NO.

If one is fixed and one isn't this will also cause it as their scents are different.

It Might Take A While But Your Cat Will Get Accepted.

how did you introduce the cats? did you let them get to know each other gradually? If not i would suggest doing this.. also your older cat may just be treating the kitten just like any nomal older cat would. unless blood is drawn i would suggest letting the older cat put the younger cat in its place as the hiarachy in the house has to be extablished.

also ensure that both the kitten and the older cat can get away from each other if they want to do not force them in to the same room let them sort it out for themselves.

separate them for a week... in that week take a rag and the new one down with it, then take it and wipe the old cat with it. go back and forth several times a day for a week. Then make a slow introduction, they should be okay with each other, because the new cat's scent will be familiar to him... some one even suggested putting frosting or something sweet on each cats nose when you do introduce them, so that they will be more concerned with the sweet than fighting

Give it time, is all I can say. When a cat realizes they're no longer the only one in the house, they have to adjust to this major life change. Make sure you give your old cat lots of love to show them they're still important, and slowly the kitetn will become part of the family.

yes give them both attenetion and they will get along together and they will hiss and that is to show that it is their area. so make sure when they are in the same room that you watch and to make sure they dont hurt the kitten and it takes about 2 weeks in some cases
